Artist biography
Aleksis Agustin was born in the summer of 1998 in the Philippines, before soon moving to Canada with her family at the age of two. After moving several times over the years, she’s now settled in Edmonton, Alberta, where she’s officially pursuing her dream of doing art. Now, she will be graduating from Grant MacEwan University with her Fine Art Diploma. Agustin has already been featured in the Suncor Art Show for the Catholic School Board (2016) in Fort McMurray, Alberta, as well as the Miquwahkesis Project for the TOTAL Aboriginal Interpretive Trail, where she submitted a painted fiberglass fox which she worked on collaboratively with her peers. Furthermore, she is the winner for the 2016 Kim Jenkins Art Scholarship. During the latter half of 2020, Agustin will be taking a break from school and pursuing her passion for illustration by working on personal projects, and expanding her portfolio.
Artist statement
As a multidisciplinary artist, I work in both traditional and digital art. In regards to the former, I practice particularly in acrylic painting, graphite and coloured-pencil drawing, assembled sculpture and installation, and woven textiles. Using these mediums, and with an interest in illustration, I create works with the intent of telling stories about my experience as a woman, an immigrant, as someone who experiences neurosis, and all of the above at the same time. I place a particular focus on myths and legend as a parallel to our everyday, using fantastical characters and imagery to illustrate reality, and how close we are to the tales we fear, and adore.
