It is the natural home to a colony of sea lions and a diverse array of other marine life and shore creatures. Care is taken not to disturb the natural habitat of the wild animals that dwell here. Stellar sea lions gather in this natural amphitheater, usually during fall and winter. In the spring and summer, they breed and have their young on rock ledges just outside the cave.

The sea level portion of this cave and the sea cliff rocks just outside the cave have become, over the centuries, the only known mainland rookery (breeding area) and hauling area (wintering home) of the Stellar sea lion, and to lesser extent, the California sea lion. The high vault is also a natural resting place for fascinating sea birds.

The job was started in April of 1958. A ten by ten, 70 foot drift tunnel was blasted in the cave wall and then an eight by fifteen foot vertical shaft was excavated, ascending 215 feet. The blasting necessary to drive these two intersection shafts was confined to spring months when the sea lions were out of the caves. The engineers and construction workers used every possible precaution to insure that the wildlife would not be disturbed.

The drift tunnel and elevator shaft could not be finished the first year before the sea lions returned to the caves so the remaining excavation was delayed and finished in the spring 1959. During the fall and winter of 1959, deep foundations were laid, and the shaft and drift tunnel were lined with Gunite, a mixture of sand, cement, and water, applied with compressed air.

The Cave vicinity is home to several other animals other than Stellar sea lions including bats, pigeon guillemots, cormorants, gulls, orcas, gray whales, humpback whales, harbor seals, California sea lions, bald eagles, mountain lions, black bear, elk, deer, chipmunks, gray squirrels, owls, common murre, tufted puffin, marbled murrelet, black oystercatcher, anklets, sandpiper, dunlin, whimbrel, snowy plover, osprey, killdeer, and numerous ducks and geese. Many seabird species are endemic and found nowhere else, except along the Oregon Coast.

Even the best finish is not very effective if impurities are present in the basic material. Pouring melted brass into a mold is the most convenient method for creating complex designs, but brass is a copper-zinc alloy and copper has an extremely high melting point. Melting brass causes the zinc to evaporate, creating microscopic bubbles in the solidified product. These imperfections promote oxidation and weaken finishes. A brass bar is heated to 750, placed in an open mold and then compressed by an extremely powerful press (the system includes presses up to 3,600 tons). This procedure creates products of extraordinary compactness since the brass is never melted.

Air enters the cylinder through a filter (A), undergoes an initial filtration which removes airborne dust,

improves its quality and protects piston and cylinder. The piston (B) travels inside the cylinder

despite the relative motion, will not be subject to appreciable wear. In the cylinder air is compressed

and heated (to about 100C), it is then necessary to pass it through the air-to-air exchanger (D) where,

at an ambient temperature of about 20C, the air will

remain at approx. 5 C. The compressed air must be cooled in order to reach the dew point, which is

a necessary condition for condensation of the water vapour present in the air. In the drying column (E)

the cooled air passes through the cyclone (F) where it deposits the first drops of dew that are collected in

the tank (G). Above the cyclone, air passes through the filter disc (R) then it passes through a silica gel

mix (I) with high adsorbent power, where residual moisture is removed. After leaving the drying

column, air passes through two filters: the first one is sintered bronze (H), the second one polyester

(L); the polyester filter (L) may be replaced with an antibacterial HEPA H14 filter. The Cattani Air Compressor tank is lined

with an anti microbial surface comprised of silver ion to ensure hygenic storage of compressed air.

While the tank is filling, air also enters the small tank (O) through a selective valve (N) . At the end of

each charge, the dry air in the small tank counter-flows through the drying column to regenerate the

silica gel. This occurs because this return air drags with it all of the water previously removed from

the incoming air and conveys it into the bottle (P). The entire process described above takes place automatically.

My camera was set up with a relatively wide-angle lens but the sea lion was moving so fast and so unpredictably that I was not able to compose an interesting photograph. Every single time I was ready to trip the shutter, the sea lion moved out of my frame. The perfect moment was there to be captured, but it only lasted an instant before the sea lion darted away. The compressed time frame worked because of the team's experience with staging theatrical spectacles and because Curry and Perry had worked together previously. Curry's team, for example, created the white Egyptian horse and other props Perry used on her 2014 Prismatic tour.

The Super Bowl show is especially gratifying because it appeals to such a broad audience, including many people who may not see a show on Broadway. When Perry entered atop the lion, Curry said, "we were all very uplifted and elated. It was as if we had won the Super Bowl ourselves."

Press and sear the mushrooms. Heat a large cast iron skillet to medium heat. Add the mushrooms (being careful not to overfill the pan) and weigh down with additional cast iron pan. I put a large jar of beans in the top pan to add more weight. You can also use a brick wrapped in tin foil or heavier cover to create a press. Cook for 2 -3 minutes then flip over being careful not to tear the mushrooms. Sprinkle a bit more of seasoning and then press with pan again. Repeat this process several times until mushrooms are condensed and compressed to about an inch thick. During the pressing, feel free to season the mushrooms with the more of spice blend or drizzle on more oil if needed.
