Once a survivor of domestic violence escapes, they likely experience homelessness, and children who grow up in homes of violence often carry that trauma with them throughout the rest of their lives. These situations have devastating effects on individuals and families in our community.
Family Tree works alongside people affected by child abuse, domestic violence and homelessness throughout their journey to safety and economic independence, providing emergency residential services, case management and advocacy, therapeutic services, outreach support, housing search and placement, education and employment support, among many other services. By leveraging a deeper, broader and more holistic array of life-changing services and programs, Family Tree empowers individuals and families to discover their own strengths to create lasting, positive change.

Michelle grew up in what she described as a dysfunctional family. She was living below the poverty line, her mother was a drug addict, and her father was absent. As a teenager, Michelle knew she needed to leave, but when she did, she found herself in an abusive relationship. Over many years, Michelle and her two young children, tried to escape countless times but always ran out of resources, leading them back to her perpetrator. This cycle finally ended when Michelle found Family Tree.

It's just like a normal family tree, but it's the supervisor lineage of your doctoral training. In the same way that your family tree has your parents, your grandparents, your great grand parents, and so on, when you complete a PhD you also have your PhD parent (supervisor), PhD grandparent (your PhD supervisor's supervisor), and your PhD great grandparent.
Depending on your university and project your PhD may be supervised by a single mentoring academic (non-branching family tree) or you might have a highly involved co-supervisor (branching family free because you had two PhD parents). I grew up on a single parent project on government handouts (research council grants) in government housing (public university). So not too different my from actual life.
With no training in genealogy I was able trace my PhD supervision back seven generations to around 1875. From internet sleuthing I've linked it back with certainity to my PhD great, great grandfather, Ernest B. Ludlam (author of Outlines of Inorganic Chemistry) who completed his PhD at the University of Bristol. But from there it gets less certain.
Operating on the basis that a person is most likely to publish their first research paper while a PhD student, then searching for their papers in the standard journal databases (I'm a chemist, so Web of Science and Scifinder are my go-to websites) gives me both the university at which they completed their PhD and their supervisor (presuming that the corresponding author of their first paper is also their supervisor, which is usually, but not always, the case). Another method is to find their PhD thesis in the university library. Their supervisor is usually the first person a student thanks on the acknowledgements page of the thesis.
In theory, and if I delve into it hard enough, I should be able to trace my PhD family tree back a few more decades at least. For universities, PhDs are a relatively recent invention from the 19th century I say recent for them, because the first university, the University of Bologna, was established in the year 1088.
There's a television show in Australia called Who Do You Think You Are? (I'm sure there are equivalent shows in other countries). In it, experts comb through the family trees of celebrities until they find an ancestor with a story they are able to build an episode around. I've watched one or two episodes (not really my thing) and I'm certain this show works because if you look deep enough you can always find someone interesting in the family tree.
The claim to fame from my PhD family tree is that Sir Harry Melville is my PhD great grandfather. Harry was a polymer chemist knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and one of the youngest fellows of the Royal Society; that's the organisation founded by Isaac Newton in 1660. The Melville Laboratory at The University of Cambridge is named after him.
Now during my 18 years of running my own research group I have graduated (or should that be birthed?) my fair share of PhD students. But so far, not one of them has gone on to become an academic and train their own PhD students. If this continues my branch of the PhD tree will die out.
Until not long ago a PhD was seen almost exclusively as a path to becoming a university professor; one simply did not do anything else with it. Apparently now only in 1 in 200 PhD graduates ends up becoming a professor.
My PhD students have gone on to work at a wide variety of organisations straight out of their doctoral studies. These include the graduate program at the Royal Bank of Scotland, the beer manufacturer Tooheys, and the government agency AICIS. One became an editor at a scientific journal, while another went on to become a medical doctor (so an MD and PhD). Many others have gone on to work at pharmaceutical companies.
Overall, I think this is a good thing. The world is not short of universities and university professors, although it does have a problem with the over casualisation of jobs and I'm of the opinion that Hogworts did not have enough professors to ensure good a student-to-teacher ratio. I'm available if they are recruiting; potions master would be right for me.
A PhD graduate should be in high demand from a wide range of employers because they bring more than just incredible expertise on a topic. To complete a PhD a student must develop a range of soft skills including collaboration and team work, written and oral communication, and data and critical analysis. PhD students also usually provide lectures, tutorials, and lab classes to undergraduate students, so they usually have a broader and deeper breadth of knowledge in their subject compared with a recent graduate.
Finally, more than one of my PhD students has shunned the workforce for the time being to focus on being a stay at home parent. The last 50 years has really seen our society devalue the role of care giving parent but I don't think their PhD is wasted in this role. As their children grow up they see a strong, intelligent role model of a parent. A parent who can use their knowledge and expertise to have a huge impact on the early years of their child's development.
