As your child progresses through their learning journey, Key Stage 3 (KS3) and Key Stage 4 (GCSE / IGCSE) represent vital stages of their education. This is when students begin to deepen subject knowledge, develop independent study skills, and prepare for formal qualifications that will shape their future opportunities.
We’ve created this page to help you understand the structure of KS3 & KS4, access the relevant curriculum documents, and plan your child’s learning effectively.
For homeschooling families following the British curriculum, you have two main pathways for your child’s formal qualifications at the end of Key Stage 4:
1. GCSEs
These are the national qualifications taken by students in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and are best suited to:
Native English speakers
Families living in the UK or who can travel to the UK for exams
Students aiming for UK universities or sixth form colleges
Parents who wish to follow the full UK national curriculum with no adaptations
2. IGCSEs
International GCSEs are equally rigorous and are better suited to:
International families who are not currently based in the UK
Students who may not be able to travel to the UK for exam sittings
Families seeking flexibility and access to exams through the British Council worldwide
Students applying to international universities or moving frequently
GCSEs: Can be sat at private exam centres in the UK. There are numerous centres that accept private candidates (we can provide recommendations).
IGCSEs: Can be sat internationally through British Council exam centres or selected private British/International schools abroad.
(Edexcel and AQA are the two most widely used exam boards for IGCSEs internationally).
