However, programming is something I'm quite used to!

So, I know there is a MSC (MIDI Show Control) protocol for DOT2, and that works like a charm. I can easilly control faders, buttons and jump from cue to cue with MSC.

Works just great to be honest. However...

MIDI is somewhat oldschool, and usually requires software specific for that.

UDP, TCP or OSC however is quite widespread when it comes to newer software and hardware (still some MIDI, but less and less).

I've seen some posts about controlling DOT2 with OSC when searching around the web, but no real examples or documentation of it.

Like this: Touch OSC

So, is there an OSC option? Is there any other options? What's possible? Any other option than MSC?

Hi astalsberg,

great that you like MA products/ software and the dot2 in special.

Sorry to say, but at the moment there is no MA product remotable by OSC directly.

But it is planned that the gMA3 software should be able to.

The remote possibilities of the MA dot2 are either via DC remote (closing an electronic contact triggers something in the console),

DMX (an incoming DMX channel triggers something), MIDI (ok maybe old fashioned, but still wide spread, cheap and reliable),

LTC SMPTE timecode, via network (from dot2 onPC or other dot2 consoles), a sound signal or via a web browser.

although this thread is over half a year old, maybe this might help someone: with dot2 onPC, it is possible to use the sACN protocol (IP/UDP) to talk to the "dmx" remote-inputs. I use a python library called "sacn" ( ) that I found very easy to use und that works great. I have not tried this with a standalone console, but expect it should work as well.

There are some good phone apps out there that you can use to focus and set lights with when you are in the lift If you mean RDM that way. If you to control remotely away from your console, you can place a wing via art net back stage or somewhere if you are talking about RDM this way.

But i have to admit that I, and certainly others, would love to have RDM compatibility on our dot 2.

Secondly i don't really understand why not implementing it in the first place? I work mainly in small to medium sized theatre which all have the benefit of having some RDM fixtures, but this benefit is lost because my desire is to work with the MA philosophy because i like it and i like your products (dot2 more precisely as I would never need an overkill gMA2 in those places which have RDM) and i do not wish to turn over to the dark ETC side which on their new ColourSource 40AV console (direct dot2 concurrent to my eyes) have enabled RDM.

If you are talking about RDM (Remote Device Management) MA dot2 now has with software version 1.3 Web Remotes! You can connect/disconnect with a web browser based remote! This allows you to to remotely control the console from a cell phone or tablet device. You can do quite a bit with it.

Yes I am talking about that. And I already am very grateful for that web remote which has been pretty useful. But managing the console from a remote location is not only what RDM is about. It is also about managing distant fixture from the console (for example: adressing fixtures, changing fixture mode, etc...). For example I work in a theatre which has quite a lot of ETC's source four LED which are "RDM-able" and I would love not to have to always go to the fixture to address it and choose it's mode of operation but to simply do it from the desk.

That is the main purpose of RDM and one of the last development about dmx. Every new great fixture come to the market with RDM abilities and i can't imagine that MA lighting wouldn't add RDM functions to the DOT2!

It's not just for remote device control (focus, tilt, etc) in my opinion, but to me it is important to be able to monitor my fixtures' errors, lamp life, set the addresses remotely without having to drag the scissor lift out to make changes . . . etc.

Intuitive operation is the core of the dot2 philosophy and with all connectivity onboard, the dot2 range is suitable for most theatre, touring, corporate, television and education lighting environments.

The company was founded in 1983 by Michael Adenau (MA) and enjoys strong growth from the very beginning until today. More than 10,000 MA control desks are being used all overthe world and MAs digital dimming systems have become an industry standard. The success accelerated in 1985, when software specialist Ernst Ebrecht joined MA Lighting as a partner. In this period MAintroduced the Lightcommander 24 and Lightcommander 48 control desks. When launched in 1992 the MA Scancommander caused a huge stir in the burgeoning world of moving light control. This product established MA Lighting as a leading innovator of lighting control for the global touring and event sector. Leading producers of intelligent lighting showed great interest in MA's new operating philosophy, which radically differed from the historical "dimmer -oriented" control systems of that time.In the spring of 1998 MA showed the world the eagerly awaited grandMA console. This hybrid lighting control console brought a new level of hardware sophistication to the lighting world. The full color touch screens, motorized faders, built in UPS (uninterruptible power supply) and hard drive were only the beginning. The summer of 2000 saw the launch of a host of new products from MA, the grandMA light, the grandMA replay unit and the grandMA offline editor. In the autumn of 2001, the grandMA range will be completed with the introduction of the grandMA ultra-light. The ultra-light has 1,024 channels but retains the main features of a grandMA at a very competitive price.Today, MA Lighting are well known for their technical know-how and have achieved an unique international reputation for its operational philosophy. MAs award-winning products are extremely reliable and offer cutting-edge solutions fordimming and control.Organizational StructureThis story of success is strongly based on the teamwork between MA and Lightpower.
