Massachusetts in the World

PETITION

We, the undersigned delegates to the 2017 Massachusetts Democratic State Convention, hereby propose the following amendment to the draft platform:

MASSACHUSETTS IN THE WORLD

"Mankind must put an end to war or war will put an end to mankind." – John F. Kennedy

The question of war and peace is a local as well as a national issue. Young men and women of Massachusetts fight and die in foreign wars; refugees caused by war seek our shores; our military budget prevents Federal investment in our people’s needs. No conceivable military threat to the United States can justify our massive military expenditure; we must not use militarism as a jobs program.

Massachusetts Democrats will struggle for:

  • Diplomacy first, not war: upholding international law and human rights; cooperation with other countries and the UN; full funding of the State Department and foreign aid.
  • Responsible reductions in military spending, freeing up funds for important domestic priorities such as badly-needed spending on infrastructure, transportation, health, education, housing and human services.
  • Reducing the catastrophic dangers of an accidental or intentional nuclear war by renouncing the first use of nuclear weapons, stopping the waste of more billions on new nuclear weapons, and working toward nuclear disarmament in accordance with our obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
