In 1994, the LGV Rhne-Alpes high-speed rail line brought TGV service to the airport, providing direct trains to Paris and Marseille. The fan-shaped canopy of the Gare de Lyon Saint-Exupry, designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, is the airport's most notable architectural feature.

The airport was originally named Lyon Satolas Airport, after the nearby eponymous village, but in 2000 the airport and train station were renamed in honour of Lyonnais aviation pioneer and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupry, on the centenary of his birth. He was a native of Lyon, and a laureate of the Grand Prix du roman de l'Acadmie franaise, and died in World War II.

In 2013, the airport served 8,562,298 passengers, an increase of 1.3% over the previous year. Air freight increased by 22.7% to 44,820 tonnes, although overall aircraft movements dropped by 2.8% to 113,420.[2]

The airport consists of passenger terminals 1 and 2 which are interconnected on the landside by a central building that itself has a foot-bridge to the nearby Gare de Lyon Saint-Exupry high-speed railway station and the Rhnexpress terminus.[3] The airport also features two runways as well as cargo facilities. A total of 16,000 car spaces in four car parks (P2-P5) are available. Two of the parks are underground (P2 and P3) while the long-stay parks (P4 and P5) are located at a distance from the terminals behind the railway station.[3]

The Rhnexpress tramway began operations in August 2010 and links Gare de Lyon-Part-Dieu east of Lyon's city centre with Gare de Lyon Saint-Exupry next to the airport in approximately 30 minutes[69][70] using and sharing existing tracks of the Lyon tramway as well as a newly constructed route. This tramway replaced the former coach shuttle services (Satobus) that operated beforehand leaving the airport with no other public connections to the city centre.

Coach links connect the airport with the centre of other towns in the area including Grenoble (at least once an hour), Saint-tienne and Chambry. Bus operators also offer a coach shuttle service to the surrounding French ski resorts, including Tignes, Val d'Isere, Val Thorens and more.

There is one hotel located on the site of LYS in front of Terminal 1. More are located just outside of the airport at a distance of about half a mile, offering a shuttle bus service to get you to your terminal. The neighboring suburb of Bron offers plenty of accommodation options a little closer to the city, and for those who are willing to travel a little farther afield, the city of Lyon offers many places to stay.

I've flown into both Lyon and Geneva several times. Geneva airport is much more convenient for what you want. There is very good bus service to both Annecy and Chamonix, although in some cases, depending on the time of day, you may need to go into Geneva center first. Here is some info:

I'd choose Geneva on the sole basis that it means you pretty much avoid backtracking.

If time allows then include a stop in Lyon between Annecy and Avignon.

Added bonuses perhaps will be Geneva's convenient airport, better choice of flights, and cheaper fares.

To help boost trade through improved transportation, the Rhone Alps Region and CCIL organized a competition to design a new rail station at Saint-Exupry Airport in Satolas, serving a rail connection to Lyon. The design brief called for a building that would provide smooth passenger flow while creating an exciting and symbolic 'gateway to the region'. In addition to providing access to four tracks with accommodations for two more in the future, the station was to incorporate ticketing offices, retail shops, restaurant facilities, temporary exhibition space and offices for the station master, the airport police as well as the SNCF and CCIL staff.

The caisson's cover forms the walkway of the platform hall: a longitudinal, arched concrete structure, 1,640-foot long, bridged at two points by a unifying, symmetrical road pattern. Access to the platforms is provided via concrete bridges, stairs, escalators and glass elevators. The service concourse is connected to the airport by a raised, 180-meter steel gallery, which in turn connects to a covered extension for pedestrian access to the parking garage, underground service area and elevators. Bus and taxi terminals are located to the west.

The Rhnexpress shuttle connects Lyon-Saint Exupry airport to Lyon city centre in less than 30 minutes..

The first departure is scheduled at 4:25am at Part-Dieu, and 5:00am at the airport. Rhnexpress runs every 15 minutes during the day, and every 30 minutes from 4:25am to 6am and from 9pm to midnight.

Formerly known as Lyon Satolas Airport, it was renamed in the honour of the French writer and pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupry, in 2000. The airport has two terminals, designated as Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, and one satellite terminal, Terminal 3, which was opened in November 2011.

The Future terminal project adds new arrival counters, baggage handling systems and check-in counters at the airport. It also features inspection/screening stations. The new terminal building is built based on the high environmental quality (HQE) specifications.

The airport currently has two asphalt coated runways. Runway A is 4,000m-long and 13,124ft-wide, whereas Runway B is 2,670m-long and 8,760ft-wide. Three additional Fast turn-off taxiways (FTOT) were constructed on runway B by 2012. Each FTOT is 500m-long and 45m-wide.

Operational since August 2010, Rhnexpress provides rail transport services for the passengers at the airport. The service connects TGV rail station of Lyon Part-Dieu with the Gare de Lyon Saint-Exupry.
