Wii Shogi (officially "Tsuushin Taikyoku: Hayazashi Shogi Sandan") is a great game, being a sequel to Wii Chess (but with shogi instead), it adds a lot of new modes and gamemodes. However, it seems to freeze on the strap screen on Wiis that are not Japanese. Here's how to fix it!
(This should also work for "Tsuushin Taikyoku: Igo Dojo 2700-Mon" and the Japanese version of Wii Chess. I've got no idea, give it a try. It may even also work for other region-hardlocked WiiWare games.)
(Do not try this on a Wii U, it won't work.)
(Do not try this on a Korean Wii. It may be safe but better not take risks.)
(If you just want to play it on Dolphin, go to Config, and disable "Allow Mismatched Region Settings", then open the wad directly, and that should do it.)
So... as the wisest shogi players out there say... (not really)
Get WiiMod Lite if you don't have it already, and copy the "apps" folder to the root: https://github.com/RiiConnect24/Wii-Mod-Lite/releases/download/v1.7/WiiModLite_v1.7.zip
Yes, I'm aware other apps may work too, but here we'll be using WiiMod Lite, because it's simple and almost everyone has it already.
Launch it from the Homebrew Channel, and go to "Any Title Manager | Region Changer".
Select Region Changer. It may warn you that this may brick your Wii, but we're only going to change a few settings that are perfectly safe to change.
Change "Game Region Setting" to Japan.
If your Wii is PAL, change the video mode to NTSC. If you are using composite or SCART video cables and your TV doesn't like NTSC, you may have to play in black and white, but most old TVs and all modern TVs should accept NTSC just fine.
Verify that you haven't touched anything else, and select Save Settings. If the banner at the top hasn't changed colour, you are safe. Press HOME to return.
If you haven't got the channel region free hack from Priiloader, enable it (assuming you have Priiloader, turn your Wii off, turn it on, hold RESET, go to Hacks and enable it.) You can also region free the wad manually if you prefer.
Open Wii Shogi from the Wii Menu, and verify that it works.
After you're done playing, it is recommended to open WiiMod Lite again and change the two settings back to normal. Otherwise, some channels could not work, and some games (like the PAL version of Wii Sports Resort) will show a black screen.
I'm sure we'll find a way to fix this crash on the wad directly, but that'll take some time. Hope this helped!
Oh, and do let me know if you find other games that didn't work before but now work with this setup. I'd like to know.
