What is Lunar Geopark?
Geoparks are areas where geologically important sites and landscapes are managed for protection, education, and sustainable development. To date, UNESCO has certified more than 200 Geoparks around the world.
The concept of Geoparks is also important for extraterrestrial environments. Numerous spacecraft have been launched to the Moon, and our interest in lunar exploration continues to grow. As we begin to live beyond Earth, it is essential to pursue both environmental protection and responsible development of the lunar surface.
Human cultures have deep-rooted connections to the Moon. For example, in many Asian countries, there is a traditional belief that a rabbit lives on the Moon—a story inspired by the patterns observed on the lunar surface. This cultural narrative illustrates how Geoparks can bridge the natural environment and human culture associated with the Moon.
While this website focuses on the Moon Rabbit, our aim is to explore how the Geopark concept can be applied to extraterrestrial bodies such as the Moon and Mars.
