Pastor Brian Plum

LAKEVIEW UMC Administrative Council Minutes                 August 8, 2023

The meeting was called to order by Bud Newbrough and opened with prayer.  Those in attendance in addition to Bud were Pastor Brian, Dick and Linda Thompson, Jeff Ekstrom, Wayne Kersey, Don Griffith and Don and Marilyn Morton.

Motion carried (Linda/Wayne) to accept the July minutes.

The treasurer’s report was distributed.  Motion carried (Wayne/Dick) to accept the report.

Dick reported for the trustees.  The asbestos abatement people have been meeting with Don Morton (trustee representative) and are planning for removal of the tile in the Sunday School section of the church.  Church people will be responsible for clearing the affected rooms and that section of the church will be off limits while the work is being done.  Dick plans to make phone calls to line up help for this work.  Things will be stored in the multipurpose room while the asbestos abatement work is being done.

Wayne announced that Nancy Smith will have children’s church in the room under the sanctuary while the “clean up” is taking place.

There have been some problems with the prayer chain delivery by email.  Wayne says the company has been contacted, they have worked on the situation and hopefully the problem has been corrected.

Wayne reported that the PPRC committee met with Pastor Brian and everything is going ok.   There has been some discussion regarding the Pastor leaving before the end of the service, and the explanation is that the Pastor is serving two churches and his plan is to be at the church early in order to greet people before the service rather than at the end of the service.  Current plans are to start the Bible Study the week of Labor Day.

The meeting was closed with prayer by Pastor Brian. Respectfully submitted,

Marilyn S. Morton

Status of Water Damage Cleanup at Lakeview

The Problem:  A flex hose to the toilet in one of the children's bathrooms in the kindergarten room broke on July 11 while the church was unattended.  By the time it was discovered, water was standing in the kindergarten room, the choir room, the kitchen, Nancy's classroom, the small bathroom near the water cooler, and the main hallway.  Other areas were unaffected.

The Response:  SERVPRO was contracted to remove the water, remove the damaged "stuff" (mainly stuff in cardboard boxes that touched the floor), and then run fans and dehumidifiers to dry everything back to a normal level.  At present, SERVPRO has done all they can do, and the moisture under the tile is still too high for a safe living environment.

The Next Step:  The affected floor tile has been tested and contains asbestos fibers.  We are currently in the process of contracting with Asbestos Abatement company to remove and dispose of the tile. (Church personnel will be responsible for clearing the rooms for this work.)  No information at this time as to when this work will begin.  We do know that the whole education wing of the church will be isolated and unavailable to church and community people during this work.

Completion:  The Church will then select the flooring for the affected areas and proceed to contract for the replacement flooring.

Our insurance with State Farm is expected to cover essentially all this work.

Blessing of the Backpacks is August 13th.  Invite your neighbor children/students to bring their backpacks and come to the church for the blessing.  Afterwards several meaningful projects/activities will help students get ready for school, remembering the love of God.
