A message from Pastor Kerry...

A traveler in a book I was reading walked into a tavern for some rest and recovery. “Just in from the country?” offered a patron. “What makes you say that?” replied the traveler. “Your shoes,” responded the patron. “You don’t get dust like that on your shoes in town.”

That brief little description stuck with me, the way pollen sticks on your car in the spring. A distinctive mark, yet subtle.

The vision of the United Methodist Church in West Virginia is “to be a Christ-led spiritual breath of fresh air that changes the world” as it seeks to “discover, develop, and deploy passionate spiritual leaders who make disciples of Jesus Christ.” There ought to be something distinct yet subtle about United Methodists in West Virginia, something that makes people curious and interested to interact with us.

It’s clear to me that the dust of Lakeview marks its members as family in the Riverlake area. The next needful thing is for the family of Lakeview to get dusty (remember “Pigpen” from “Peanuts?) with our neighbors. There’s a thousand people in Riverlake, and most of them don’t regularly participate in any church. Without a doubt they know about the church – a lot of them probably drive by it every day – but they don’t know the church, the family of God that is the congregation of Lakeview.

“Hey neighbor, do you go to church somewhere?” “Uh, no, why?” “I go to Lakeview, and it’s like family to me. Why don’t you join me this Sunday, we’ll go together!”

“Hey neighbor, do you go to church somewhere?” “Nah, church isn’t for me, I’m not into that stuff.” “That’s cool, I get it. Do you like hanging out with friends? That’s what Lakeview is like, yknow. It just feels good to be a part of something. Why don’t you join me this Sunday, we’ll go together!”

And of course one thing besides “family” that Lakeview offers is Jesus, and yeah, he’s kind of a big deal. In Jesus we have our identity as well as salvation and commission: we are children of God, forgiven and redeemed and sent into the neighborhood to share the good news that no one needs to be alone, and that there is new life in him.

So let’s get dusty, and give ‘em Jesus.

Lakeview Sonshine Run, 2023

Saturday, May 6th, Lakeview hosted its third Sonshine Run/Walk.  The weather was ideal and the family fun was overflowing.  We had 45 participants (many of whom were kids), several dogs, and we raised over $1,500 for the local food pantries, thanks in part to several generous donations.  Special thanks to our many volunteers.

The first place finisher was Tanner Ekstrom!  Other notable age group winners were Doug Child, Evan Rowe, Amelia Rowe, Bobby Iddings,  Kerry Bart, and Wayne Kersey.  Special recognition wasn't given to Becky Child and Karen Kersey for coming in dead last, but it should have.

Finishing results and race photos can be found on aptiming.com.

Coffee & Conversation continues Tuesdays, at 8:30am, at the church.  Come for fellowship with our church family.  Special note:  We will not be having it May 9, because of a work party.

Bible journaling continues on Thursday mornings at 10:00am.  We each work independently in our Bibles or on clear plastic sheets that can be inserted in our Bibles.  We have tons of samples and good drawing skills aren't required.  We listen to a chapter from Max Lucado's book, Traveling Light, releasing the burdens you were never intended to bear .  It's a nice time to quiet down, relax, color, and spend some time with God.

Lakeview Administrative Council Minutes, May 2, 2023

Opening

The meeting was called to order with prayer at 7:00 p.m. by Bud Newbrough.

Present:  Pastor Kerry, Bud Newbrough, Dick and Linda Thompson, Marilyn Morton, Wayne Kersey, Deborah Rowe, Don Griffith

Minutes - Marilyn Morton for Deborah Rowe

The minutes from the April meeting were reviewed and accepted.

Treasurer’s Report - Bud Newbrough for Jeff Ekstrom

A new printer was purchased by PK.  The old copier will be thrown away. Motion was made to accept the Treasurer’s report for April and was unanimously approved. (Wayne/Linda)

Trustee’s Report - Dicky Thompson

Dicky was inquiring about the wifi router at the Parsonage.  PK said that he had been reimbursed for it by the church and it will stay when he moves.

Dicky requested that PK give passwords for the wifi and the furnace to him before he moves.

The new pastor has a 30 foot camper.  It may be a violation of the city ordinance to store in the parsonage driveway.  PK thinks there is enough room beside the parsonage to store the camper.

Dicky asked Debbie to help with the flower beds, Chris Davis will place mulch. Debbie agreed to help with the flower beds again this year.

A coupling went bad in the water pump. Dicky and John McCormick plan to work on it soon.

The parking lines need to be painted.  Dicky suggested that the church buy a paint marker and everyone agreed.

Nurture - Linda Thompson

Sunrise breakfast went well on Easter Sunday.

 Parsonage - Marilyn Morton

Since PK is moving there is work that needs to be done on the Parsonage.  Volunteers are scheduled to paint the main rooms on Monday, May 8.  Pk has already       removed items from the walls and has filled the holes.

      •  She has spoken with someone from Chandler’s and she plans to order the carpet soon so it will be ready to install.

PS/PRC - Wayne Kersey

There was an April 22 Conference and he met with the incoming new pastor.  The worship times were discussed and he thinks they will probably move the church start time to 9:30.

Since we will be sharing the pastor with St. Andrews UMC, the pastoral and parsonage utility costs will be split evenly.

Wayne received a $2,000 quote to move the pastor from Dunbar Transfer but they later told him they do not go as far as Weston.  He then received another quote from Central Transfer.

There will be a pastor/parish meeting on Monday re: evaluation per conference.  They will also discuss PK’s bon voyage and Pastor Brian’s welcome parties.

Race:  The committee has been meeting to prepare for the race.  Approximately 14 have preregistered online. They will meet again on Thursday.  PK to talk to the local boy scout troop about volunteering.

Pastor Kerry

PK will be out of town Monday (May 8) returning Thursday (May 11) for retreat.

June 11 he will be away at annual conference

June 18 will be his last Sunday at Lakeview UMC.

June 25 Joe Hill, the District Superintendent will be at Lakeview UMC.
