The season of Lent begins at the end of February this year. The word “lent” comes from the same word for “length” and refers to the “lengthening of days” as daylight hours increase from the winter darkness. Lent is the season of preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, and
it begins in solemnity on Ash Wednesday, February 22, as we reflect that it is our own sinfulness that led Jesus to the cross. Christians receive a mark of ashes on their head (or hands) as a sign of mourning for
that sinfulness, and many Christians devote themselves to prayer and study and self-denial or fasting (giving something up) during Lent.
The Lenten liturgy from our Book of Worship states that “During this season converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when persons … were restored to participation in the life of the Church. In this way the whole congregation was reminded of the mercy and forgiveness
proclaimed in the gospel of Jesus Christ and the need we all have to renew our faith.” Can you picture the Lakeview sanctuary full of worshipers on Easter Sunday? The bright colors, maybe ladies in hats; colorful flowers, and the community feeling of joy? Did you read those two sentences and
smile? I smiled to write it. And I hope that this can be a season where you say “yes” to participation in the life of the Church at Lakeview. For “there is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is
over all and through all and in all” (Ephesians 4:4-6).
Lakeview is a special gathering in Riverlake, much like a family. Let’s get together in preparation for the Easter celebration.
With you on the journey,
Pastor Kerry
