A message from Pastor Kerry...

“A disciple ought to read with the newspaper in one hand and the Bible in the other.” 20th century theologian Karl Barth was fond of teaching that idea, even if it’s not a direct quotation.

In the news these days: There are traffic jams in American ports – just weeks ahead of Halloween and Thanksgiving and Christmas and Valentine’s Day, suppliers are literally lined up at our door, waiting to unload and distribute things for us to buy.

I’m starting to rethink that tale about the gate in the Jerusalem wall called the Eye of the Needle.

Kanawha County is still the most-vaccinated county in WV, but overall there are 47 states with higher vaccination rates than WV. I will go on record to say that your pastor and your bishop and your CDC and your Chief Medical Advisor to the President fully back vaccination as one of our best community defenses against COVID19, especially when people wear those face masks in public.

I know I don’t need to point out to you how disciples ought to put others first and ought to bear one another’s burdens in love.

There’s also news about Congress and the most recent lifting of the debt ceiling, although I admit I don’t have much of a grasp on the topic.

Something I do know is that as disciples we are neither powerless nor hopeless, and we need not live in fear. We know the end of the story – victory belongs to the Lord – and we know that as Pentecost people, the Spirit of God is with us, giving us comfort and courage, wisdom, and guidance.

So whatever our circumstances, let us keep our eyes on Christ, while seeking to bear the light of Christ in all that we do.

I love you and there is nothing you can do about it!

With you on the journey – Pastor Kerry

Undie Sunday is October 17th. Worshipers are invited to bring donations of undergarments for all ages, to be distributed to local organizations.

HEAT AND AIR CONDITIONING

Attention persons using any of the rooms in the educational wing of the church. These rooms (Kindergarten, Choir room, Kitchen, Multipurpose room, offices, and Sunday school) are only being heated on Sunday morning.

If you need to use these rooms during cold weather be sure and call Dick Thompson at 304-727-3723 and I will set up for you to have heat in the rooms you are using. Be aware that it takes three to eight hours to warm these rooms during the winter, so call ahead when you know you will be using them.

Just because it is announced or scheduled does not mean I will set the heat up. If I am contacted, it gets taken care of immediately.

We are continually studying this situation to best serve our needs and not waste energy heating them every day. I will keep you updated of any changes and welcome any suggestions from you.

Dick Thompson

Bible Journaling every Thursday, 10:00am, at the church. Everyone invited!

Lakeview Administrative Council Minutes

October 5, 2021

Opening

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Bud Newbrough and opened with prayer. The minutes of the September meeting were distributed and reviewed. Motion (Linda/Dicky) was made to accept the minutes and was unanimously approved.

Present

Pastor Kerry, Bud Newbrough, Wayne Kersey, Marilyn Morton, Dicky Thompson, Linda Thompson, Deborah Rowe

Treasurer’s Report - Jeff Ekstrom by Bud Newbrough

All bills have been paid. Motion was made(Wayne/Marilyn) to accept the Treasurer’s report and was unanimously approved. Bud noted that the monthly income is a little lower than usual. There was a discussion about the Kroger Community Reward contribution. They have paid $277.00 to date.

Trustee’s Report - Dicky Thompson

• John Humphreys came over and helped with the furnace maintenance.

• The riding lawn mower pedal sometimes catches when starting, this will be fixed before spring. Dicky mentioned that there was a $150 donation made to repair the old mower. Now that the mower is working, and it is stored in the parsonage shed, we may want to consider enlarging the gate to have a 2 way swing.

• Don Morton trimmed the shrubs.

• PK will change the light bulb in the multi-purpose room after the meeting.

• Dicky wanted to remind everyone that there is a gym in the church basement if anyone wants to use it.

• Mary Ferguson is currently doing the AV job.

PS/PRC - Wayne Kersey

• There was a meeting on September 7 to discuss salaries for the 2022 budget submission. The following was decided: 2% increase for the Pastor, (pending input from Humphreys), 0% pianist, N/A choir director, +$100 increase custodian and +$100 increase for the Sunday school teacher.

• Wayne to deliver Tracie’s key back to Bill Casto.

• Nancy has asked that Time for Children get moved up to earlier in the service to give her time to complete her lesson. It was also agreed to have Nancy to do Time for Children, instead of Kathi to jump start the Sunday school lesson. This was already discussed with Kathi and she was in agreement.

• Christmas baskets are coming up and the St. Albans Ministerial Association (SAMA) works on it. The last few years we have come in a little late and had to make adjustments.

Nurture - Linda Thompson

• Linda stated that there would probably not be a community Thanksgiving dinner this year, due to Covid. Paster Kerry stated that the Covid numbers supported that.

• Linda made a good suggestion that we could ask that the congregation donate canned goods for the food bank, every Sunday during the month of November, since we would not be donating during the community Thanksgiving dinner.

Parsonage - Marilyn Morton

There is nothing new to report.

Pastor’s Report - Pastor Kerry

• The Covid statistics for Kanawha County have increased in new cases and deaths. There are 2-3 new deaths every day and 100 new cases every day.

• He plans to send a fruit basket to Mary Ferguson as a thank you for taking care of the audio visual (AV) during church service.

• He will be completing & delivering flood buckets on October 7. Each congregation completed 6-7 buckets.

• Thank you to the congregation for faithful apportionment giving.

• Tracie and Tommy have found a new church.

• Chris Paul has asked if the youth (kindergarten and first grade) can use the multipurpose room for basketball practice. He had mentioned that Bruce Dickson (in this league) had donated the basketball basket. There was a discussion about potential liability if someone were to get Covid, or who would supervise. In the past people who have used the room were not allowed in the kitchen or sanctuary. PK to get a Facility Use Agreement for them to sign, and will get some of our questions answered.

• The College of Bishops in the US came out with a letter a few weeks ago advising if any church has a charter with Boy Scouts, to move to a Facility Use Agreement with the scouts. Lakeview UMC does not currently charter with the Boy Scouts.

• There was a meeting of the St. Albans Ministerial Association. PK would like to be active in this association. PK mentioned that he had organized a ministerial association in Huntington. Bud said to find out how much dues are and we will pay. Linda said that she thought they were $25.00.

The finance committee is to meet Sunday, October 10 at a time to be determined.

• The nomination committee is to meet October 14, at 7:00 p.m.

• PK likes the format of the Monday, Bible Studies with alternating locations and topics. The Bible Study is set up for 10 weeks at a time. They just finished 1st Timothy and UMC History.

• The next meeting is November 2.
