On Sunday night, October 12th, beginning at 5pm, we will learn about the Jewish festival of Thanksgiving, Sukkot. It's a time for eating, praying and praising God for all our blessings. We'll start with a baked potato bar, with a large assortment of toppings and some yummy desserts. The Outreach Committee will prepare the potatoes, and a sign-up sheet will be available for the toppings/desserts so we can make sure we have a wide variety. Nancy Smith will take us to a "sukkah", a shelter we will build outside at the back end of the hallway. It will highlight the end of the harvest with pumpkins, gourds, lanterns, paper chains made by children, etc. It's a shelter from worldly cares and a time to remember those years the Israelites wandered for 40 years in the desert. Nancy will share some stories and help us build awareness and honor this tradition. We will then return to the tables in the Fellowship Hall and have some "table challenges" to build community and have some fun with some hands-on Sukkot activities. The Outreach Committee would like you to bring some canned food to the dinner to be delivered to the SA Food Pantry. This way, we can share our blessings with those in need in our community. It promises to be an evening of learning, fun, and good food. We'll see you then!
Humphreys UMC has invited the women at Lakeview UMC to a Women's Prayer Retreat on Saturday, September 27th, from 9:00 - 12:00. The speaker is Karen Wicker, who has a reputation for being highly engaging and a wonderful leader. See Nancy Smith if you have questions, etc.
It's time again for another Yard Sale! Start cleaning out and bringing your sale items down to the church. Linda Ancion, our fearless leader, needs everyone to pitch in and help bring in items, sort them, price them, and work the sale on October 4th, from 8:00am - noon. Last time we took all the left-over items in cars to Goodwill immediately after the sale. They seemed appreciative and it was an efficient way of handling items that weren't sold. She's planning on doing that again and appreciative of all who will help with that again.
We sold hot dogs last spring during the sale and by 10:00am, we ran out of them. All 60 were sold! Linda is buying more this year to sell and also is planning to sell BBQ sandwiches. Definitely plan on getting your lunch at the sale! Both are delicious!
If the shape of this world has got you down, or anxiety and stress are taking a toll on you, then we have the perfect prescription to help you. The Monday Hiking Club. Becky Child, our resident naturalist and positive attitude promoter, is our leader. We're walking at Ridenour Park in Nitro. We meet near the gazebo and hike once around the lake at a leisurely pace. Becky is known to point out interesting plants, mushrooms, birds, turtles, and (yikes!) even a snake peaking its head out of the lake. It is literally a breath of fresh air, and you'll feel much better connecting with God's world afterward. See you next Monday at 4pm. The hike takes about an hour.
A lot of people in our congregation came together and worked hard to help Lakeview host the 5th Sunday Worship Service & Lunch for all the Methodist churches in St. Albans on August 31st. Sprucing up the church, preparing BBQ's, creating a meaningful service for worship, developing a quality children's church, preparing the Fellowship Hall to seat 100 guests, hosting the luncheon, all were handled by our Lakeview family.
It would be impossible to name everyone that devoted a lot of time and energy to express our collective thanks. We do have to highlight one individual, though, John McCormick. He, without being asked, weeded, then put down mulch for the entire center part of our horseshoe driveway. Then later in the week, bought, cooked, and served all the BBQ sandwiches on that Sunday. He's a quiet worker who doesn't want to be acknowledged, but sometimes we just need to share our thanks and appreciation.
We estimated about 100 people attended the service and at least 80 joined together in the Fellowship Hall for lunch. The special offering that day was taken for Jericho House. We collected $745.00 and delivered the check to them this past week. Thank you, everyone.
Pastor Sheila is leading a Bible Study of the book of James, on Wednesday mornings, 11:00am, in the Community Room. See you there!
