I joined chose Media, Self, and Society Scholars upon my acceptance to UMD and the Scholars program because I felt as though it was the most fitting for me. Prior to attending UMD, I was the editor-in-chief of my high school publication for three years as well as a freelance writer for Affinity Magazine and the Youth Activism Project. In high school I studied broadcast journalism as my chosen academy, which truly peaked my interest in all things media and the influence that it has on society. When I joined, I wanted my experience to teach me something new. I had spent a long time practicing different forms of journalism, but now I wanted to learn about its history and how to properly analyze the media (via journalism) that we consume everyday. I would say that I am in the process of doing just that; class discussions and assignments have significantly strengthened my critical analysis skills in understanding the motive and reception behind different forms of media content. The improved lens I've acquired to watch the news has been very helpful in the past year of very newsworthy, controversial topics such as COVID, the election, protesting etc. Media Scholars is teaching me how I can consume media with a grain of salt and make more informed decisions on what mediums are best suitable for me.
