This project delves into cultural beauty standards by using Kokeshi dolls as a canvas for artistic exploration. Inspired by the Oiran, a Japanese courtesan known for her ornate attire and elaborate hairstyles, and the Akuaba doll, a fertility symbol from the Akan tribe in Africa, the project highlights the societal pressures women face to conform to beauty ideals. The dolls are crafted from distinct woods—cherry wood for the Japanese-influenced Kokeshi and mahogany for the African-inspired version—chosen to embody the cultural essence of each tradition. The modular design allows the dolls to be customized with interchangeable cultural elements, enhancing their representation of diverse beauty ideals.
