Following the newsletter, click on the current math topic. In each section you will find School to Home connections. The link will give a more in depth look at what you child is learning throughout the unit (even by each lesson), examples, and things to work on at home for extra practice. At the end on the page there will be links for each lesson we work on. This is a great resource to use as homework if you wish. You may also look at the upcoming topics.

Topic 1 - Understand Addition and Subtraction
Topic 1 expands on what your child learned in Kindergarten about addition and subtraction. This topic will help your child develop a deeper understanding of addition and subtraction by working on “add to,” “put together,” “take from,” “take apart,” and “compare” problems.

Topic 2 - Fluently Add and Subtract Within 10
Topic 2 expands on what your child has learned related to solving addition and subtraction problems to 10. Your child will use strategies such as counting on and counting back, using doubles and near doubles, adding to 5, adding to 10, adding in any order, and thinking addition to subtract.

Topic 3 - Addition Facts to 20: Use Strategies
Topic 3 expands on what your child has learned related to solving addition problems. Your child will demonstrate fluency with addition within 10 and build on strategies used earlier to add within 20. These strategies include counting on, making 10, and using doubles and near doubles.

Topic 4 - Subtraction Facts to 20: Use Strategies
Topic 4 introduces your child to several key strategies for solving subtraction problems. These strategies include counting to subtract, making 10 to subtract, and using addition to subtract. These strategies will help develop and deepen the important understanding of the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Topic 5 - Work with Addition and Subtraction Equations
Topic 5 focuses on the understanding that the equal sign means that both sides of an equation represent the same value. Your child will determine whether addition and subtraction equations are true or false and also find the missing number in addition and subtraction equations. Your child will learn that three numbers can be added by grouping them in different ways, and that no matter how they are grouped, the sum is the same. This important mathematics idea is called the Associative Property of Addition.

Topic 6 - Represent and Interpret Data
In Topic 6, your child will collect, organize, represent, and interpret data. Many of the problems your child will solve will represent addition situations (total number of data points, how many in each category) and subtraction situations (how many more, how many fewer).

Topic 7 - Extend the Counting Sequence
Topic 7 focuses on counting to 120, starting at any number less than 120. Your child will count forward by 1s, read and write numbers to 120, count by 1s and 10s, and represent a number of objects with a written numeral for quantities to 120. Using a hundred chart to count will help your child build understanding about 2-digit numbers that will be important in later learning about place value.

Topic 8 - Understand Place Value
Topic 8 develops the concept of tens and ones, which is a key foundation of the base-10 number system. This topic strengthens your child’s understanding of the place-value system, which is necessary for 2-digit addition and subtraction.

Topic 9 - Compare Two-Digit Numbers
In Topic 9, your child will use their understanding of place value to compare 2-digit numbers. This topic, along with Topic 8, strengthens your child’s number sense and understanding of the place-value system in preparation for 2-digit addition and subtraction.

Topic 10 - Use Models and Strategies to Add Tens and Ones
Topic 10 focuses on adding a 2-digit number to a 1-digit or 2-digit number. Your child will learn different tools and strategies, including concrete models, drawings, properties of operations, and place-value to find answers. No matter which strategy is chosen, it is important for your child to explain the thinking behind it.

Topic 11 - Use Models and Strategies to Subtract Tens
Topic 11 focuses on subtracting multiples of 10 less than 100. Your child will use concrete models, drawings, properties of operations, and strategies based on place value. It is important that your child can explain how they use different strategies to solve the subtraction problems.

Topic 12 - Measuring Length
Topic 12 focuses on measuring length. Your child will develop an understanding of length by using different measuring tools and by comparing and ordering objects to determine which is shortest and which is longest.

Topic 13 - Time and Money
Topic 13 focuses on two major concepts: money and time. Your child will identify coins and their values, and will find the value of combinations of coins in cents up to $1. Telling and writing times to the hour and half hour using both analog and digital clocks are also introduced in this topic.

Topic 14 - Reason with Shapes and Their Attributes
Topic 14 deepens your child’s understanding of defining and non-defining attributes of two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. Your child will also put together various shapes to create composite shapes, and then use the composite shapes to create new shapes.
