Village: The fey-stricken inhabitants live in an average-sized village nestled in the middle of dense woods. To the untrained eye, the village appears entirely normal during the day. Villagers go about their daily routines, gathering herbs and performing other peaceful activities. However, a closer inspection reveals an unsettling absence of newborns or children under the age of ten.
Description: During the day, the village exudes an air of tranquility. The houses are constructed from rocks and feature metal bars on their doors and windows, ostensibly to keep wildlife at bay. Inhabitants are welcoming and friendly to visitors, though they become increasingly apprehensive as dusk approaches. They firmly urge any visitors to leave the village before nightfall, expressing an inability to provide overnight shelter under any circumstances.
Curse: As night falls, the true nature of the villagers is revealed. They transform into undead beings and lock themselves within their fortified homes to prevent any harm they might inflict upon others. This nightly transformation is the result of a curse cast by a fey creature, born out of a tragic love story and the villagers' own actions
Historical Background: The curse's origin dates back to a time when the village was extremely isolated, harboring a deep-seated distrust and disdain for outsiders. A teenage boy from the village developed a romantic relationship with a beautiful fey creature he met in the woods. Their love grew stronger with each clandestine meeting, but the boy’s attempt to introduce his beloved to the village was met with hostility and rejection.
The villagers demanded that the boy abandon the fey, but he refused, choosing love over his community. Choosing to leave the village with his beloved, the villagers conspired to hinder his departure. In a gruesome act of collective betrayal, the villagers each took turns stabbing him as a 'parting gift'. Despite his grievous wounds, the boy struggled on, reaching his fey lover only to die in her arms.
Enraged by this brutal act, the fey put the village under a powerful curse. She burned their homes and decreed that the villagers would turn undead every night, would be unable to have children, and would never age or die. The curse would remain unbroken until a significant change in their hearts and behavior occurred — a condition that, despite many efforts, has yet to be fulfilled.
Current Status: Despite their attempts to change their ways and seek redemption, the villagers remain cursed. They greet each dawn with a fleeting hope for a normal day, but the knowledge of their impending transformation casts a perpetual shadow over their existence. The village has become a place of hidden sorrow, with its inhabitants forever caught between life and death. The inhabitants have developed a strong sense of community, bonded by their shared suffering. Their daily interactions are characterized by mutual support and a collective effort to keep the village functioning.
1. Structure: The village's architecture, with its rock houses and metal-barred windows and doors, is designed to contain the villagers during their nocturnal undead state.
2. Daytime Activities: Villagers engage in typical rural activities, maintaining an illusion of normalcy.
3. Visitor Interactions: While welcoming during the day, villagers display a sense of urgency and fear as evening approaches, adamantly insisting that all visitors leave before nightfall.
4. Absence of Youth: There are no children or infants due to the curse, giving the village a peculiar demographic imbalance.
