Introduction to Taxonomy and Body Symmetry
Students will explore how animals are classified by learning about scientific names and common phyla. Students will then learn to classify their favorite animals. Students will also discover body symmetry and explore nature so students can find their own examples. They will also start the process of turning a super worm into a beetle and watch as it develops through the stages of life for the rest of the semester.
Week 2 (10/04/2024)
Exploring the World of Insects and Life Cycles
Students will identify the life cycle, and how it differs from insect to insect. Students will each get their own earth worm and discover if they like light or dark spaces, and how that is possible if they don't have eyes. Students will go outside and identify different insects and what taxonomic group they belong in. Students will then learn about other taxonomic groups and their life cycles.
Week 3 (11/01/2024)
How Animals Defend Themselves
Students will explore different techniques animals use to defend themselves with some specimen examples. Students will then dissect a squid and discover their ink sack and the rest of its anatomy.
Week 4 (11/08/2024)
Animals That Hunt
Learn about different ways animals adapted to hunt specific prey. Students will dissect a chicken foot to see exactly how animals grab their prey.
Week 5 (12/06/2024): SHOWCASE!
Animals in Flight
Students will learn about the similarities and differences in how insects, birds, and mammals fly. Students will dissect a chicken wing to learn the anatomy.
