Encounter Detroit Mission trip

When is the trip?: June 22-28 2023

Where is the trip?: we will be traveling to Detroit to work with and support a ministry called camp restore Detroit (https: //www.Detroitcamprestore.org/) and to work with, support and learn from our fellow EPC church - 5point7 church. Pastor Brian Evans has been a friend of LPC for many years. Our church has supported their ministry and growth and has recently helped build a basketball court next to the church. We will be staying at camp restore Detroit's facility at Mt Calvary Lutheran Church in the 9th District neighborhood.

Who can go?: the encounter restore Detroit mission trip is open to all (2022-2023) current 8th - 12th graders, college students, and parents. Due to the nature of the trip, space may be limited. College students will be asked to sign and abide by a leadership covenant and serve as peer+ leaders for junior high and high school students.

We will have ample opportunities for students to earn money for the trip. We also have scholarship money available but you have to ask. We also can restructure trip payments to suit your family’s needs. Andrew is kind and generous please let him help to get you on the trip!

Will there be fundraising?: we will raise money together through a variety of fundraising and we hope that money would not be an issue for any student, if it becomes an issue there are scholarships available please talk to andrew (see below). You must participate in at least 2 small fundraiser work projects. If you do not participate in at least 2 you will forfeit $50 in LPC scholarship funds that has already earmarked for you on this trip.

What will we do there?: Encounter’s ministry at camp restore Detroit and 5point7 church will like be broken into three specific aspects: human care, environmental, and construction.

Human care: the 9th precinct of Detroit where camp restore Detroit is located looks largely forgotten and abandoned. Many of the people in our community also feel this way. With human care, our campers work to restore hope and worth to the people in our community. Building long-lasting relationships and partnerships shows our community is not forgotten. We are all precious children of God who deserve love and care.

Environmental blight: the environmental work campers complete at camp restore Detroit may be the best way for campers to have a visual idea of the difference their work makes in our community. Especially in the 9th precinct, where camp restore Detroit is located, much of the city looks like it has been overtaken by nature. City lots which once held beautiful houses are now three feet deep in weeds, overgrown trees and bushes, and trash. We may step in and safely help rehabilitate the neighborhood with the love of God!

Construction: the construction work campers complete at camp restore Detroit is a special way for us to connect with our community. Community members fill out a restoration service application telling us a little bit about themselves, how they are involved in our community, and outlining the work. This helps camp restore Detroit staff assess the work and assign the right group of campers to complete the project. Projects can range anywhere from painting, to putting up drywall, to a new roof!

What does this commitment look like?:

Pre-trip Meetings: we will meet together a number of times between now and the trip to prepare the students to work and live together in a cross-cultural environment. Students must commit to these dates; any conflicts should be mentioned in this application and will may considered when reviewing the students application. You must participate in 4 of the 6 meetings if you miss more than 2 meetings you will forfeit $50 in LPC scholarship funds that has already earmarked for you on this trip.
