Sailing toward a low-tech future
Sailing toward a low-tech future
Be part of the Low Tech Armada - a network of sailors, tinkerers and makers committed to bringing autonomy to populations most in need. Powered by the wind, we deliver equipment to help build simple, repairable, low carbon and energy-autonomous solutions.
An island in Haïti: From scarcity to Low-tech Society ?
On the Île-à-Vache in Haïti, there’s no access to drinking water, no electricity, and very limited tools and materials for construction or repair.
Unlike much of Haïti, the island is peaceful. As one resident puts it: "Here, whoever you are, you can sleep outside without fear."
Far from the grip of consumerism, this small island maintains a level of independence that offers real space for grassroots action. That’s why we believe Île-à-Vache is a perfect place to co-create and experiment a low-tech society. With and for the population.
Low Tech to meet most urgent needs and to build autonomy
Improving access to clean drinking water
Building biosand water filters thanks to very simple materials. Installing rainwater collectors from salvaged materials like bamboos.
Promoting energy-autonomous solutions
Creating a low-tech hub in the community centers so that every one can experiment different useful low-tech solutions: pedal-powered devices, dry toilets, solar cooker, solar dryers.
We're collecting useful equipment for low-tech constructions:
Bicycles and spare parts
Sailing gear: sails, ropes, anchors
Fishing and spearfishing: nets, lines, hooks, fins, masks, snorkels, spearguns, buoys
Tools: drills, screws, basic hand tools
Plumbing: hoses, elbows, faucets, jerrycans
Containers: buckets, barrels
Waterproof tarp
Sewing machine
We will still need some electricity so we also need :
Solar pannel, batteries, regulators
And gear for this solidarity mission more broadly:
Healthcare: bandages, disinfectant, first-aid supplies
Education: overhead projectors, pens, markers, notebooks
Shoes, especially sports shoes
Between June and November 2025, we’re gathering materials and donations in various collections points in Europe, America and the Caraibean. In November, we set sail for Haiti.
Collection points : Rio Dulce (Guatemala), Miami (USA), Martinique, Guadeloupe, Saint-Barthélemy, Dominican Republic, Marseille (France), Bretagne (France)
If you’re a sailor who shares our vision, join us in this mission! Whether you're sailing from America or Europe, even if you can’t reach Haiti itself, you can play a crucial role by delivering your cargo to our collection points.
Together, we can create a powerful flotilla of solidarity.
We're currently looking for motivated volunteers in specific locations across France, but spontaneous applications are always welcome from anywhere in the world. If you're passionate about sailing and low-tech solutions or if you just want to contribute to our mission, take a look at our volunteer opportunities!
Some items are harder to find through donations and must be bought, for example sails or good masks for fishing. We will always buy second-hand materials as reuse is central to our approach. By giving, you’re not just funding equipment — you’re investing in a model built on reuse, resourcefulness, and solidarity.
Who we are ?
Emma: An environmental activist for 7 years, she has founded several associations, worked in companies and with political parties.
Hugo: A former scientist, now a jack-of-all-trades handyman, reuse expert, and sailor.
Fuega: Our sailboat and adventure companion with which we sail through the Caribbean.
