I made these two wooden Love Knot sculptures in 2011-2012, and after over a decade outdoors, they are rotting away, having deteriorated to a point where they are no longer presentable.
The sculptures were conceived with the idea of "Tying the knot of Friendship between Saugerties and Woodstock". They are designed so that each sculpture sends you to the other village, hence the name “Love KNOT”.
The elements of my sculptures are Heart, Infinity, and Tear, i.e. love is forever, but there is no love without tears of joy or pain. My idea was to make these sculptures life size so that people could interact with them. Whenever children pass by it, they immediately climb on it. I ask you, what could be a better affirmation than that?
Original Love Knots, c. 2011
With over a decade in the elements, these wooden sculptures have decayed beyond repair. After a year-long process of arranging and fundraising, these two sculptures have been recast in fiberglass, to allow them to last forever - fitting, as the foundation of the Love Knot sculpture is the infinity sign.
If I had a nickel for every picture taken with these sculptures, I wouldn’t have needed to fundraise. But we did it! Now we can preserve these pieces that have become fixtures of our towns, popular beyond expectation, and a memory that people take away.
