It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

"Lorem ipsum" pseudo-latin is also used as placeholder text, because 1) it is similar in format (consonant/vowel balance, word size, punctuation) to real text but 2) it has no meaning, so clients or others won't be distracted by reading actual words. It is widely believed that the history of Lorem Ipsum originates with Cicero in the 1st Century BC and his text De Finibus bonorum et malorum. This philosophical work, also known as On the Ends of Good and Evil, was split into five books. The Lorem Ipsum we know today is derived from parts of the first book Liber Primus and its discussion on hedonism, the words of which had been altered, added and removed to make it nonsensical and improper Latin. It is not known exactly when the text gained its current traditional form. However references to the phrase "lorem ipsum" can be found in the 1914 Loeb Classical Library Edition of the De Finibus in sections 32 and 33.

Although the phrase is nonsense, it does have a long history. The phrase has been used for several centuries by typographers to show the most distinctive features of their fonts. During the 1500s, a printer adapted Cicero's text to develop a page of type samples. Since then, the Latin-like text has been the printing industry's standard for fake, or dummy, text. Before electronic publishing, graphic designers had to mock up layouts by drawing in squiggled lines to indicate text. The advent of self-adhesive sheets preprinted with "Lorem ipsum" gave a more realistic way to indicate where text would go on a page.

I think the use of lorem ipsum depends on the type of wireframes you work on. When I look at a UX designer's portfolio my main questions are "what sort of problems have they worked on?" and "what were the thought process in solving the problems?"

On the other hand if your portfolio is focused on pixel perfect final presentations then lorem ipsums should be kept to a minimum. My portfolio, for instance, doesn't include any pixel perfect designs. (Well maybe some from 10-15 years ago but none recently.)

Also, depending on the project, lorem ipsum can easily become what I call "designer friendly data" - data that conforms to the design, rather than a design that was clearly purposeful in its presentation of realistic data.

As long as you didn't use lorem ipsum as a crutch in terms of design, and as long as the recruiter/employer can look past it, then it's fine. But if you can easily replace it with realistic data, it wouldn't hurt.

Using real copy also helps you discover spacing issues that might otherwise go unnoticed until later in the process. When people use lorem ipsum, they tend to plug in the same amount of text which can give you a false sense of security.

I agree about ditching greek text wherever possible, but sometimes you just can't do it (especially when you're working in larger teams &#8212 unlike the 37Signals paradigm). If you're designing something like a catalogue (for instance the Crate and Barrel catalogue), you have a few groups developing assets in parallel &#8212 photography, design, copy. The design comes together by using polaroids for placement (not the real photography) and placeholder text blocks (not "lorem ipsum" per se but not final copy either). Sometimes the "real" stuff doesn't get in there until a few days before press.
