Add quick shortcuts on your lock screen that go to your favorite iPhone apps or bookmarks with Launchify, a new app released on the same day as iOS 16. The app lets you import your own custom icons or use thousands from its own library.

The free version of Launchify lets you add only two circular widgets to your lock screen -- a subscription for $17 a year or $2 a month unlocks additional widgets and the ability to add apps not included in the Launchify database.

The popular flight-tracking app Flighty has already been updated to include support for lock screen widgets. Now you can just glance at your iPhone to get the latest updates on arrivals and departures.

You can also add lock screen widgets with a countdown to your trip, the weather in your destination, an in-flight progress bar or other detailed information about your flight, including gate number, seat assignment and baggage claim info.

The social media giant Facebook surprised users on the day of the iOS 16 launch by updating its iPhone app to include support for two lock screen widgets. You can add birthdays at a glance or top updates from your friends.

The ambient sounds app Dark Noise has become a popular tool for iPhone users who like to have background noise for sleeping or focusing. Now you can access white noise directly from the lock screen. Dark Noise has added all three types of widgets for the various sounds and noises included with the app.

Heavy Reddit users will appreciate the new lock screen widgets from this third-party app for tracking the popular message board site. Apollo for Reddit developer Christian Selig has already created several new lock screen widgets for monitoring Reddit activity at a glance while your iPhone is locked.

The health-focused iPhone app WaterMinder helps keep you hydrated, and now you can get reminders to drink more water -- straight from your iPhone lock screen. The app was recently updated to add eight styles of lock screen widgets.

Things is a popular personal task manager for iPhone that lets you create to-do lists and track your progress in completing them. A new update for iOS 16 puts much of the power of Things directly into your iPhone lock screen.

Three new widgets from Things let you view the tasks on your to-do list, quickly add a new task or track your progress in completing your tasks. Things' lock screen widget defaults to the tasks in your Today list, but you can customize it to show other items like your inbox, deadlines or shopping lists.

The useful package-tracking app Parcel lets you monitor the progress of your deliveries from 300 services, including UPS, FedEx, DHL and the US Postal Service. With its latest update for iOS 16, the app now adds the ability to track a specific package directly from your lock screen. Parcel's lock screen widgets come in all three formats -- circular, rectangular and inline.

A Smart Stack is a pre-built collection of widgets that displays the right widget based on factors like your location, an activity, or time. A Smart Stack automatically rotates widgets to show the most relevant information throughout the day.

Lock screen interaction is difficult. Android allows basic operations with two window flags (FLAG_SHOW_WHEN_LOCKED and FLAG_DISMISS_KEYGUARD). FLAG_SHOW_WHEN_LOCKED works pretty consistently in that it will show on top of the lock screen even when security is enabled (the security isn't bypassed, you can't switch to another non-FLAG_SHOW_WHEN_LOCKED window).

If you're just doing something temporary, like while music is playing or similar, you'll probably mostly be okay. If you're trying to create a custom lock screen then there's a lot of unusual interactions on all the different android platforms. ("Help! I can't turn off my alarm without rebooting my HTC phone").

Window flag: when set the window will cause the keyguard to be dismissed, only if it is not a secure lock keyguard. Because such a keyguard is not needed for security, it will never re-appear if the user navigates to another window (in contrast to FLAG_SHOW_WHEN_LOCKED, which will only temporarily hide both secure and non-secure keyguards but ensure they reappear when the user moves to another UI that doesn't hide them). If the keyguard is currently active and is secure (requires an unlock pattern) than the user will still need to confirm it before seeing this window, unless FLAG_SHOW_WHEN_LOCKED has also been set. The Android Lock Screen widget gets its content from the Notification system, so check that is enabled in PA Settings=>Look and Feel=>Notifications. Also make sure it is enabled in Android's own settings.

I guess the lockscreen controls must use the same button event mechanisms that Bluetooth and headsets do for button presses. Do you need to have the Bluetooth radio actually turned on, or merely provide permission for its control access? @maxmp might be able to tell us more though.

@Rafal B On recent Android builds, media playing apps pass any info they wish to display to system's lockscreen 'widget' - but the layout is defined by Android, not the app. The only way to get around that is to take over the whole lockscreen completely, as a kind of intermediate page, which should be available via PA Setttings=>Lock Screen=>Show on Lock Screen.

I've just been messing about with settings and gone into widgets on lock screen and tried toggling the music player setting on to see if that did anything and that has got it back. I'm not sure if that setting was toggled on before and if so I don't know how it was toggled off, but that has fixed it.

I guess this could have been Samsung's / Android's penchant for disabling permissions for thing it thinks haven't been used for a while (as noted above for BT/external device permission), but I can't think why something as simple as a Lockscreen widget should get hit that way.

The buttons on the lockscreen media controller widget are now configurable, see PA Settings=>Misc=>Buttons. The middle three '' buttons are system-specified and cannot be changed. The first two Button items in the menu are for the outer two controls on the Notification or Lockscreen Widget (they are basically the same thing). The subsequent Buttons 3-6 are for Android Auto/etc, which offers more than the initial five button slots.

Hard reset seems to be the only thing that works, but then it comes back. I am to the fu**ing boiling point now with this effing bug. Please Apple, fix it. I don't want to have to restart my GD phone 5 times a day because the music widget is on the lock screen.

Having the same issue. It comes on when I turn off my car so I think it might be a bluetooth issue. I rebooted the phone, didn't play any media, and it still appeared on the lock screen. Hope Apple fixes this soon!

Update: I reset my phone and went to a meeting. When I came out, the music player was on my lock screen. No bluetooth, no media was played. It just appeared. My next step is to delete the music app and reinstall it. But I think I'll lose all my playlists. ?

About a week ago there was a system update that I accepted. Ever since then I have not been able to get the music widget to appear from the lock screen. I have gone into the settings>Lock Screen>Widgets and I've made sure the Music button is lit up as "on". I've toggled it on and off and have restarted the phone multiple times in each position. The other widgets aren't working either, but it's primarily the music that I need to have fixed.

I'm setting up the lockscreen on my new iPhone 12. While editing I saw that location services were off, but I set the widgets anyway intending to turn them on later. So on my lock screen my widgets were blank. I turned on location services under settings>privacy AND under "weather." Still blank. I returned to "wallpaper" to delete and re-add the widgets. NOW while editing I can see the local conditions in the widgets. (I couldn't before). So, good, right? Fixed! Wrong. The widgets on the lockscreen are still blank. I can see conditions for a split second when I first turn my screen on with the right side button but they go blank immediately. I have toggled location services off then back on, I have restarted the phone (waiting 30 seconds!). The iOS is up to date. What am I missing?

I have wifi on and two cellular bars. Like I said, I can see the current conditions *in the widgets* while in the editing screen and sometimes when I first click the lock screen on from dark with the right side button. The data is there, it's just not displaying on the lockscreen for some reason.

I have a similar problem, except I am on a 5th generation iPad Air running iPadOS 17.1.2, and, as posted above by Connorbranscome, I allowed access to lock screen widgets when locked from the beginning. Turning that function off or on does nothing to fix the bug. How do I fix it?

I created a lock screen widget for my app last year, as a widget app extension. It has worked fine, but I am working on a new release and it has stopped updating:It is not called anymore when I call WidgetCenter.shared.reloadTimelines(ofKind: "MyWidget"), and the preview screen is now blank when I add it on the lockscreen.

Hey everyone,

Since 2 days or so, my phone isn't showing the Audible widget anymore when the screen is locked. The book is still playing but I am not able to pause, move forward and so on in the lock screen.

I have to unlock the phone and then just do all that in the app... It's really annoying :/

Audible is also not showing up in the top bar with the banners although they are activated in the notifications settings. I did enable it in the app itself and nothing really changed the last days, so I am not sure why it's like that now.

Anyone has an idea?

I am having an Honor 8 with Android version 7.
