Inspired by the spine-tingling stories and mysterious legends of Richmond’s past, Haunts of Richmond was founded in 2004. The following year, the Shadows of Shockoe Ghost Tour began introducing guests to the legends and reported hauntings of Richmond’s oldest neighborhood, establishing what would become Richmond’s Original Ghost Tour. The success of Shadows of Shockoe soon carried Haunts of Richmond beyond Shockoe Bottom. New routes brought guests into some of the city’s oldest and most storied neighborhoods, including Capitol Hill, Church Hill, Franklin Street, and the VCU campus. Each tour grew from careful historical research, local legends, and reported paranormal encounters. Together, these stories explore not only Richmond’s ghosts, but also the people and events that shaped the city and left a lasting mark on its streets. In 2016, longtime team members Beth and Chris Houlihan took the helm. Since that time, Haunts of Richmond has continued to build upon its tradition of historically grounded storytelling through new tours, community partnerships, and special events that reveal different sides of Richmond’s haunted past. Today, Haunts of Richmond remains dedicated to sharing the city’s history through compelling stories, experienced guides, and an approach that respects both the documented record and the mysteries that resist easy explanation. More than two decades after our story began, we are still uncovering new tales and inviting guests to discover what may linger along Richmond’s historic streets.
