ICMS (Edinburgh, Scotland), April 5th-9th 2027
Social justice, equality/equity, diversity, inclusion (JEDI for short) has in recent years gained a significant role in the public conversation and made historical advances for society. Many measures have been introduced to ensure JEDI in a variety of settings and mathematics has not been different.
However, there are two main, pressing aspects that we would like to bring to the table in this collective effort: on the one hand, this healthy, progressive tide is changing due to well-known recent political events. It is now more pressing than ever to defend, and continue, the advances made over recent years in JEDI at the mathematics collective. On the other hand, through our JEDI work experience we have noticed that the views, voices, and approaches from the Global South do not have usually the relevance that should.
Thus, the main aims of our conference will be:
To explore good practices when establishing and developing support networks for minorities in mathematics based on existing cases, with a view towards supporting those collectives affected by the wave of anti-JEDI policies worldwide;
To create a platform where to bring historically marginalized voices to the forefront of the discussion for JEDI in mathematics.
In addition, we also would like to include the following points:
To share data-based, evidence-backed good practices for JEDI in mathematics; and
To incorporate to the discussion the testimonies and experiences from the many mathematicians that populate industry and to create a constructive dialogue on the challenges faced by both collectives.
During the conference, we plan to focus one day on each aim, with a final collective wrap-up discussion to bring conclusions together.
This is an ICMS Research Workshop under the unbrella of the "Mathematics for Humanity" proyect.
