IPP Pre-op Instructions
HOW TO TAKE THE MEDICATIONS
Please note over-the-counter medications (OTC) need to be purchased on your own and you may not get or need assistance from a pharmacist to obtain these prescriptions.
BEFORE THE PROCEDURE:
Please take Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole) in the morning and evening starting two days before the procedure date (with a sip of water only) and resume the day after the procedure taking both morning and evening. Antibiotic
Patients will be prescribed an antifungal drug called Fluconazole 200mg. This is to be taken daily starting two days prior to the procedure in addition to the antibiotic. You will continue this on the morning of the procedure. Antifungal
Please wash the skin head to toe with Hibiclens (OTC) solution (PINK SOAP) one time per day for two days prior (before) to the procedure. Please rinse well after application. May irritate the skin if not rinsed thoroughly. Please DO NOT FOLLOW application directions on the bottle about avoiding the genital area.
Acetaminophen 500mg (Tylenol Extra Strength) - Pain medication. Start taking the 1 day before the procedure. 2 tablets every 8 hours.
Gabapentin 300 mg (Neurontin) - Pain medication. Start taking the 1 day before the procedure. 1 tablet every 8 hours.
Do not shave the SCROTAL AREA within 1 week prior to the procedure. Dr. Jenkins will do this himself on the day of the procedure. Shaving the scrotal area prior to the procedure increases bacterial colony count on the skin.
FYI – if you are avoiding telling people what kind of surgery you’re having, just say it’s a hernia repair.
AFTER THE PROCEDURE:
Bactrim DS (Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole) - Antibiotic. 1 tablet is to be taken at night the day after the procedure and every 12 hours thereafter until finished.
1b) - Fluconazole 100mg (Diflucan) - Antifungal. 2 tablets to be taken every 24 hours until finished.
Acetaminophen 500mg (Tylenol Extra Strength) - Pain medication. To be taken starting when you get home from the procedure. 2 tablets every 8 hours.
Meloxicam 15 mg (Mobic) - Pain medication. To be taken starting when you get home from the procedure. 1 tablet every 24 hours.
Gabapentin 300 mg (Neurontin) - Pain medication. To be taken starting when you get home from the procedure. 1 tablet every 8 hours.
Tramadol 50mg (Ultram) - Pain medication for breakthrough strong pain. To be taken after the procedure in case of the onset of pain beyond control with the other medications. 1 Tablet every 6 hours, only as needed.
Miralax (OTC) (polyethylene glycol) - Stool laxative to be taken if the patient has not had a bowel movement after being home for 36 hours. Use as directed or take up to 1 capful three times per day Max.
