AbstractPart of the richness of CERN is the connection it offers among differently situated people and communities globally. This session seeks to tap into that richness in asking: what are examples of localist production that CERNers are aware of and perhaps participating in, and what kinds of insights, strategies, and potential futures might emerge from thinking across them? “Localist production” here is understood broadly to include forms of material production such as local manufacturing, production of landscapes and places, forms of ecological production, etc., but also forms of cultural-epistemological and subjective production including the use of participatory protocols and processes to produce new relations and modes of living. Examples might include undertakings for different or better livelihoods; in contexts of struggle; toward different human-environment relations; confronting climate change, political fragmentation, failures and vulnerabilities of globalization involving supply chains, spatial mismatches between productive capacity and economic opportunity; and more.
We imagine this as an informal session. Organizers will share briefly, but the goal is invite all attendees to share examples and insights and have a broader conversation across experiences and cases. Interest in continuing such conversations toward further convenings, reflection, analysis, organizing, etc. across locations would be a bonus! Please get in touch with the session organizers if you'd like to be formally included as a participant session or if you would just like additional information.
