Abstract
Far more than the monolithic actor so often portrayed in critical theory, the state is composed of a multitude of agencies, officials, and capacities. Further, the state leverages various modes of public finance and policy incentives to foster economic outcomes. This session focuses on the diverse economies of 'the state' by asking after the multiple, perhaps contradictory, and ethical economic practices of public agencies and finance. Of particular interest, are potential sites of government involvement along with invented spaces of collaboration by the community actors in building ethical community economies.
