Abstract
As investment (financial, discursive, policy) grows in the idea of an expanding and expansive "blue economy," critical approaches to understanding this unprecedented moment of marine industry development are also emerging. While important, such criticisms cast the marine environment as, essentially, the next frontier for neoliberal policy development and capital expansion. We propose rethinking the blue economy outside of a capitalocentric frame to explore the diversity of economic practices that currently exist in and the possible futures for marine environments.
