Live Video Translator for Gemini translates audio from YouTube and Twitch by using the Google Gemini API and an API key supplied by the user. The extension is not affiliated with Google, Gemini, YouTube, or Twitch.
Data the extension handles
The extension handles only data needed to provide live translation:
- Gemini API key: Entered by the user, kept in temporary chrome.storage.session storage for the current browser session, and sent to Google only to authenticate Gemini API requests. The user must enter it again after restarting the browser.
- Video audio and derived text: After the user clicks Start Translation, audio from the selected YouTube or Twitch video is streamed directly from the extension to the Google Gemini API. Source transcripts, translated text, and translated audio returned by Gemini are processed locally for display and playback.
- Supported-page access: The extension checks only the active tab to confirm that it is a supported YouTube or Twitch video page. It does not send the page URL or browsing history to the developer or to Google.
- Local preferences and operational data: Target language, voice-output preference, run status, latency measurements, token estimates, reconnect counts, and similar diagnostic values are stored or processed locally.
- User-requested diagnostic export: If the user clicks Download diagnostic text, technical measurements are saved to a local text file. API keys, raw audio, and transcript text are intentionally excluded. The extension does not send the report to the developer or copy it to the clipboard.
How the data is used
The data is used only to authenticate the user's Gemini API request, translate the selected video's audio, show subtitles, play translated audio, maintain the user's local settings, and provide user-requested diagnostics. It is not used for advertising, analytics, profiling, credit decisions, or any unrelated purpose.
Data sharing
Video audio, the API credential required for the request, and translation requests are shared with Google Gemini API only because that processing is necessary to provide the extension's translation feature. Google's handling of that data is governed by the terms and privacy documentation applicable to the user's Gemini API account.
Google's current terms distinguish between unpaid and paid Gemini API services. For unpaid services, Google may use submitted content and generated responses to improve its products, and human reviewers may process that content. Google advises users not to submit sensitive, confidential, or personal information to unpaid services. For paid services, Google states that prompts and responses are not used to improve its products, but may be logged for a limited period for abuse prevention and legal obligations. The developer does not operate a backend server for this extension and does not receive, sell, rent, or otherwise transfer user data. The extension contains no advertising or third-party analytics.
Storage, retention, and security
- Network transmission to Google uses encrypted WSS connections.
- The API key remains only for the current browser session. Preferences and local operational values remain in chrome.storage.local until the user clears extension storage or removes the extension.
- Raw captured audio is streamed for translation and is not intentionally saved by the extension.
- Diagnostic measurements are held locally. Files exported by the user remain under the user's control.
- Data retained by Google is subject to Google's applicable Gemini API terms and policies.
Users can stop audio processing at any time, clear the session API key from the popup, delete exported diagnostic files, clear extension storage, or uninstall the extension.
Limited Use
The extension's use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. User data is used only to provide the extension's disclosed single purpose and is not used or transferred for personalized advertising, sold to data brokers, or accessed by humans except where permitted by that policy.
