This Month's Featured Text:

Lubna and Pebble

“I can compare experiences of different characters in a story.”

What does being Empathetic mean?

Being Empathetic means to have Empathy toward another person.

What is the difference between empathy and sympathy?

Sympathy is when you feel sorry and express concern for another person's situation.

Empathy is when you have experienced a similar situation and can help that person in a specific way.

Empathy is all about connecting to the character of a story.

As we read Lubna and Pebble, we learn that oftentimes we can find comfort on our own with a variety of things such as hobbies, beloved items, people to talk to, or more.  But, when we have the opportunity to help someone else, we should, especially when we can relate to what they are going through.

Being Empathetic means putting yourself in someone else's shoes and trying to understand how they feel. Sometimes, when challenging things happen to us, it's hard to have empathy. But it can help us connect with others who have been through similar experiences, and be there for them in a truly meaningful way.

The reader of the book Alma and How She Got Her Name also experiences empathy.

As the reader, we may have empathy for Alma and her dislike for her name. Alma is concerned that her name “doesn’t fit” and is too long. How many of you dislike your name or parts of your name?  When Alma learns where her name comes from and the people it represents in her life, she becomes proud of her name and who she represents.
