The map that prioritises safety.
The map that prioritises safety.
Have you ever been down a questionable route because a map app told you to? Other maps do not offer options that filter routes for lit paths or that factor in the safety of the recommended path. That's where Lit Routes comes into the picture. Our innovative new map application allows users to select routes that are lit, or safer as a preference, revolutionising the experience for map users. We are still in the production phase and we aim to extend our services on a city-by-city basis, starting with Durham, North England.
Using lit routes is 36%* safer than not - therefore this is an option that can drastically change the safety of people who walk as a primary method of transport.
Our app will allow people to make informed decisions about how and where they travel. If our app cannot provide a lit route, then It will inform the user, allowing them to prepare adequately for the journey.
Currently no dataset exists for a lit path map, so we've had to come up with systems that collect and store this data ourselves. In future, this data will be useful for more than just lighted routing e.g. research on light pollution.
This app was designed to allow people to feel safer in new places. After a while, people get to know which routes they prefer, but in a new place it is difficult to know and can be a barrier for people to access the community. This app aims to help this problem by offering a better navigation solution.

*value of 36% comes from University of Sheffield study by the Light Research Group which states that crime rates are 36% lower in lit areas vs unlit ones.
