Prose Poem - Cardboard

cardboard 

on nights like these / the music is a blank slate / and he tells me / get your eyes drunk / get your mind drunk / drink your brain / poured out of an ear / into a paper cup / he tells me / it will fit in one cup / and your whole life / can fit in one shot glass / if you distil it right / it's an art form / get your eyes drunk / or drink your eyes / or drink yourself stiff / and then stiffer / cardboard cut out and / propped up and / folded by time and / he spilled brain / on my mindless new dress / and I folded in half / weeping soft pink stains / and I folded in half again / down towards the floor / where puddles line my two-dimensional feet / he tells me / get drunk on soggy cardboard / bodies / he tells me suck moisture / from an imitation / of a person / pretending / to be a person / who is not made of cardboard / but has a cardboard brain / that folds up / and fits in one cup / but cannot be drunk / are you having fun yet? / get your mind drunk / by drinking minds / easier to swallow than your own / get your eyes drunk / on watching everyone else drink / on everyone else's drunk eyes / he tells me I'm easier to swallow / when I'm cardboard / when I'm folded over / when I'm an art form / when I get my eyes drunk / on eye contact with strangers / with the most beautiful eyes / ever to be painted on cardboard / and he says I taste / of a pair of eyes / blinking / out of the dark / and he hates it / because cardboard doesn't blink / he tells me / drink your brain / from a paper cup / but he's leaking / watery pink / thoughts / that drip / over his earrings / trailing tenderness / against his bare neck / and I could lick it clean off / if only he tasted of cardboard / if only he didn't taste / but I bite / just once / to prove he has skin / and I hand him a cup / full of someone else's brain / and teach cardboard to dance
