What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is the removal of unwanted excess subcutaneous fat, fat directly under the skin layer.

Liposuction is a single treatment therapy designed to remove excess fat deposits, and improve your body’s shape and contour. Liposuction can be performed in small areas under local anesthesia, or larger areas with sedation to help make the procedure comfortable for you. At your consultation, you will discuss with Dr. Som Kohanzadeh your areas of concern, and he will create a treatment plan to best target your goals and provide insight for post-operative expectations. Keep in mind, liposuction treats excess fat, but does not treat excess or loose skin. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight loss.

Liposuction can be combined with other procedures such as abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or breast lift and/or breast augmentation. Most common treatment areas include, belly, flank (love handles), back, thighs, buttocks, and upper arms.

What to Expect

Post operatively, depending on the area treated, you will likely require a compression garment post operatively to aid with the healing process, usually worn for 6 weeks continuously, then an additional 6 weeks for use during the daytime. You will have small incisions, approximately 1cm in length, with a small stich for closure. You will have excess swelling and fluid drainage which will gradually decrease over the next few days after surgery. Partially this can be from the procedure itself, as well as from the tumescence, or the fluid placed prior to removing the fat that is essential to liposuction procedure. You may also have bruising that will resolve over time.

You will notice your results beginning to take shape once the swelling reduces, typically in 4-6 weeks after your procedure. The full results should be expected 3 months post operatively. The results of liposuction are long lasting, should you continue a stable weight and activity level.
