PRIVACY POLICY FOR LINGUAREACTOR
Effective Date: October 29, 2026
Last Updated: October 29, 2026
1. INTRODUCTION & OVERVIEW
LinguaReactor ("we", "our", or "the extension") is a language learning browser extension designed to help users learn foreign languages through YouTube videos using dual subtitles, word definitions, and vocabulary building tools.
We are deeply committed to user privacy. LinguaReactor is designed as a client-side, local-first extension. We believe you should be able to learn languages without sacrificing your personal data, browsing history, or digital privacy.
2. INFORMATION WE COLLECT & STORE
LinguaReactor does NOT collect, harvest, transmit, or sell any personal information.
The only data processed by the extension includes:
• User Preferences: Your chosen target language, native language, font size preferences, and feature toggle states (such as auto-pause and hover dictionary).
• Saved Vocabulary: Words, translations, and example contexts that you intentionally save by clicking the star icon.
Storage Location:
All preferences and saved vocabulary are stored strictly on your local computer using the Chrome Storage API (`chrome.storage.local`). This data never leaves your device and is never uploaded to any proprietary server or third-party marketing platform.
3. PERMISSIONS REQUESTED & WHY THEY ARE NEEDED
LinguaReactor requests only the absolute minimum permissions strictly necessary for its functionality:
• `storage`
Why it is needed: Allows the extension to remember your language configuration, font styling preferences, and personal vocabulary list between browser sessions. Without this, your saved words and preferences would reset every time you restart your browser.
• Host Permission: `https://api.dictionaryapi.dev/*`
Why it is needed: Used to retrieve dictionary definitions, grammatical parts of speech, phonetic transcriptions, and audio pronunciations when you hover or click a word in the subtitles. Only the specific hovered word is queried; no user identifiers are transmitted.
• Host Permission: `https://api.mymemory.translated.net/*`
Why it is needed: Used to provide translations for subtitle sentences and words into your selected native language. Only the subtitle text to be translated is sent over HTTPS to obtain the translation text.
4. ARE ALL THESE PERMISSIONS STRICTLY NECESSARY?
YES. Every single permission listed above is strictly required for core functionality:
• `storage` is strictly needed to persist user settings and saved words locally.
• The two API host permissions (`api.dictionaryapi.dev` and `api.mymemory.translated.net`) are strictly required because in Manifest V3, background service workers cannot fetch external translation and dictionary data without explicit host permissions.
• Extraneous permissions like `activeTab`, `<all_urls>`, `cookies`, `history`, and `identity` are NOT requested. Content script injection into YouTube is handled strictly through declarative `content_scripts`, meaning no broad host permissions for YouTube are even required.
5. THIRD-PARTY SERVICES & NETWORK REQUESTS
When looking up a word or translating subtitles, standard HTTPS requests are made directly from your browser to public translation and dictionary APIs (MyMemory and DictionaryAPI). These requests contain only the word or subtitle sentence being translated. No cookies, session tokens, IP logs, or personal tracking identifiers are associated with these requests.
6. DATA RETENTION & USER CONTROL
You have complete control over your data:
• You can review your saved vocabulary at any time via the extension popup.
• You can export your vocabulary to a CSV file anytime.
• You can delete individual words or clear your entire saved vocabulary bank with a single click.
• If you uninstall LinguaReactor, all stored settings and vocabulary data are immediately and permanently erased by Google Chrome.
7. CONTACT & SUPPORT
If you have questions, feedback, or inquiries regarding this Privacy Policy or LinguaReactor's privacy practices, please contact us via the Chrome Web Store extension support tab.
