About: Mariana Itzel Calderón Corona

I'm a second-year PhD student in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. I am broadly interested in Syntax, the Syntax-Semantics interface, and Lexical Semantics. During the last few years, I've been focused on describing and trying to understand San Pablo Güilá Zapotec (Otomanguean, Oaxaca, Mexico) grammar; so language contact, fieldwork, and language reclamation complete my research interests.

I also collaborate in the Centro de Escritura y Argumentación (writing and argumentation center) at the Metropolitan Autonomous University - Cuajimalpa (UAM-C). I collaborate as well with the Güilá Zapotec language reclamation activities run by Bàl Gì Collective.

Before coming to UMass, I got an MA degree in Hispanic Linguistics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). My MA thesis, Syntactic Adaptation of Spanish Loan Verbs in San Pablo Güilá Zapotec, got an honorable mention for the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH-Mexico) annual awards. I got my BA in Linguistics at the Metropolitan Autonomous University - Iztapalapa (UAM-I).
