In Australian harness racing, the post position (also called the barrier or gate number) is the horse's assigned starting position in the mobile or standing start. Post 1 is the innermost position, directly behind the inside rail. Higher post numbers are progressively wider.
The data tables below show approximate historical win rates by post position, expressed as the percentage of races won by horses starting from each post. Data is presented for Good-rated track conditions (standard) and assumes a standard field size of 8–12 starters. Figures are rounded to one decimal place.
Melton is Australia's busiest harness racing venue by race meetings per year, operated by Harness Racing Victoria. Its 1000m sand track with tight turns creates significant post position bias at sprint distances.
Globe Derby Park in Bolivar, South Australia, is an 820m grass and sand circuit. Its tight right-handed configuration with a short 820m lap makes it one of the most post-position-sensitive harness venues in Australia. The track uses both mobile and standing starts depending on the meeting program.
At standing start meetings, the post position dynamics differ slightly. Horses begin stationary, which reduces the initial burst advantage of the inside post. The first 100–200m involves acceleration from standstill — this compresses the early advantage of Post 1 before the first turn comes into play. Historical data shows Post 1 win rates at standing start meetings are approximately 2–3 percentage points lower than at equivalent mobile start distances.
Menangle is Australia's premier harness racing venue and the home of major events including the Inter Dominion series finals when held in New South Wales. Its 1300m track is the largest of the three major venues covered here, and the greater track width and longer straights reduce — but do not eliminate — the post position advantage.
