Meeting Minutes

Highlands Neighborhood Association Minutes

March 19, 2024

Board members present: Rod Hubbard, Jacob Leuenberger, Jennifer Hellwege, Beckie Cromer, Brodey Weber and Rose Klein. Members present: Michelle Birkel.

Jennifer Hellwege made a motion to approve the minutes of the last meeting as printed and emailed. Seconded by Rod Hubbard. Approved.

Rose Klein said that egg stuffing was a challenge this year. Lancaster Manor managed to stuff one tote full. The activities director said she had a hard time finding able-bodied people to help so she asked her staff to help. Then three people quit and they gave up on helping us. Fallbrook Assisted Living stuffed two totes full, but they have their own egg hunt so that is all they did. Jennifer stuffed one tote and I did the rest, we had eight totes total. Since neither of the senior facilities stuffed many eggs we did not donate the $100 that we usually do.

Jennifer Hellwege read the treasurer’s report and announced that we paid $345.89 to Pioneer Printing to print the newsletter. Rod Hubbard made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report and pay all pending bills. Seconded by Becky Cromer. Approved.

Meagan Leuenberger did the layout for the newsletter and it has been printed and delivered to the Boy Scouts for delivery. They plan to deliver the weekend before the Egg Hunt. Some of the board will put together the prize baskets for the Egg Hunt on Tuesday, March 26 at 6:30 pm at Jennifer’s house. Becky Cromer will pick them up later and store them until needed. We will meet at the Highland’s Park shelter to put out the eggs at 11:30 on Saturday, March 30.

Jacob Leuenberger reported Lincoln Transportation and Utilities will be sending out updates on the Fletcher and West Highland Blvd regrading and resurfacing which will continue until fall. All westbound lanes of West Highland Blvd will be closed and then in April they will mill and overlay them. This may result in a two-month closure. West Fletcher Avenue from 12th Street to West Fletcher Avenue may close during construction, but the project will maintain cross traffic access for intersections along West Fletcher Avenue during the full closure of the roadway. This project will bank Fletcher up on the south side to change the slope of the roadway. This is to make the roadway safer so that there are less accidents.

Jacob also reported that Fredstrom School is adding an early childhood area adjacent to the cafeteria. The new Department of Motor Vehicles building on West Highland Blvd may be opening in mid-May. They offered to give the board a tour of the new DMV.

The Railroad Transportation Safety District (RTSD) is planning on taking out the rough railroad crossings on NW 12th north of the airport area. The Red Zone Bar & Grill and RZ’s Pizza on NW 12th may be open soon. They have gotten their liquor license.

We adjourned at 7:53 pm. The next meeting is Tuesday, April 16 at 7 pm at Spirit of Hope Church.
