Meeting Minutes

Highlands Neighborhood Association Minutes

July 18, 2022

Board Members present: Beckie Cromer, Rod Hubbard, Rose Klein, David Staenberg, Jennifer Hellwege and Brodey Weber. Member present: Kevin Simnick.

Brodey Weber made a motion to accept the June minutes as printed and emailed. Seconded by David Staenberg. Approved.

Jennifer Hellwege read the treasurer’s report. All the ads have been paid but Spirit of Hope. We owe $443.39 to Eagle Printing, $150 to Boy Scouts and $108 to Rose Klein for the Pool Party. Rod Hubbard made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report and pay all pending bills. Seconded by David Staenberg. Approved.

The membership discussed the delivery of the newsletters. Becky and Adrianna didn’t get one or it blew away. Brodey Weber said that he will not be able to attend the fall meetings because of a late class at Creighton. He will be back in person in January. Jacob Bowder (Adrianna’s husband) is a graphic designer at UNL. He might be able to help with the newsletter. David Staenberg said that he will write a “neighborhood spotlight” for the winter newsletter.

Discussion of the Pool Party: The bull horn is missing since the Egg Hunt so we were not able to use it at the Pool Party. Please everyone check at their homes! The cost of the pool was $150 for use of the pool from 6-7:30 pm. We had about 120 swimmers and five member families present. The Pool Party was considered a success. Thanks to U-Stop for ice and to Coke, Super-Saver, Hy-Vee, L & W Garbage and West Gate Bank for their donations. The idea of a block party next year was put forward.

Fall Garage Sales: Adrianna Bowder will do the garage sale listings on the website. The Fall Garage Sales will be September 15-17. Goodwill will be there Friday and Saturday from 2-4 pm. We will need to post a notice in the winter newsletter and on the website notifying people that we will charge $20 for a listing in the spring for the Spring Garage Sales.

We want to put a survey in the winter newsletter on what people would like for a service project or improvements to the neighborhood. Brodey would list some options such as: a Little Free Library, Little Free Pantry, a bench or new Highland’s signage. Adrianna said that she could share it on the website and Facebook page too. Please think of ideas for the Sept. meeting.

Jennifer said that she may do an email to members whose memberships have expired. Brodey said that Nation Builder is a program that organizes memberships and keeps track of when they come due.

Brodey said maybe we could start a business matching fund for our community improvement campaign. Brodey said he would put something in the winter newsletter and check with businesses that might want to donate. Beckie said that we could charge $200 for business memberships in the HNA and have membership benefits for businesses like bigger ads in the newsletter. David said that he could get someone to “scrape data” to find out all businesses in the Highland’s area. He will bring the list to the next meeting.

We adjourned at 8:15 pm. The next meeting is Monday, Sept. 19 at 7 pm at the Fire Station. (Meeting postponed to Wednesday, Sept 21.)
