Meeting Minutes

Highlands Neighborhood Association Minutes

April 15, 2019

Board members present: Myrna Coleman, Kris Meek, Jennifer Hellwege, Rose Klein and Jim Klein. Guest: Doug Ivey.

Doug Ivey is an owner/operator of a Kona Ice truck. They have vending permits to sell from the street and this is the fourth summer that they have been in business. They did an Egg Hunt in another neighborhood last weekend. The board agreed to allow him to bring his Kona Ice truck to the Egg Hunt and sell from the street south of the park.

Kris Meek made a motion to accept the minutes of the last meeting as printed and emailed. Seconded by Jim Klein. Approved.

Jim Klein read the treasurer’s report. Rose Klein made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report and pay all pending bills. Seconded by Jennifer Hellwege. Approved.

The board discussed plans for the Egg Hunt. Rose Klein will bring two dozen fresh eggs for the egg toss. She will also bring paper towels and wet wipes for the participants to use for cleanup after their egg breaks. Jim and Rose Klein are storing all the filled eggs at their house. The board is meeting at Myrna Coleman’s house on Wednesday, April 17 to fill the prize baskets and candy bags for the egg toss prizes.

Myrna Coleman reported from the Mayor’s Round Table: Nearly 12,000 of the street trees in Lincoln are Ash trees. Because Ash trees are susceptible to the Emerald Ash Borer, which has been found in Lincoln, the trees must be treated with an insecticide or must be removed. The city has a program where citizens can adopt an Ash tree in the parkway on their property. If you adopt a tree the costs would be paid by you, but the treatment must be done by a certified applicator. This could cost $200 or more.

The city has come out with new brochures for hazardous waste disposal at the web site www.haztogo.com. The new 2019 City of Lincoln Waste Reduction and Recycling Guide is available at Lincoln.ne.gov. They also have fact sheets on disposal of specific hazardous products such as mercury containing products, needles, latex paint and more.

The Spring Highland’s Garage Sales will be on May 16, 17 and 18 (the third week in April). The Goodwill Challenge donation pick-up will be from 3-5 pm on Friday, May 17 and from 2-5 pm on Saturday, May 18. If it is raining Goodwill will not pick up.

We adjourned at 8:20 pm. The next meeting is Monday, June 17, 2019 at 7:30 at the Fire Station.

The volunteers who helped with the Egg Hunt were: Myrna Coleman, Rose and Jim Klein, Kris Meek, Rod, Renee and Skye Hubbard, Brody Weber and Jennifer and Alissa Hellwege. Our thanks to them and to the residents of Lancaster Manor who stuffed the eggs for us.
