Hey Delegates!
My name is Taseen Akbar, and I am super excited to see you all as your LIMUN XL chair for SOCHUM! I have been doing MUN since freshman year, and this is my second year on the LIMUN Secretariat. I hope to make your experience at LIMUN fun and exciting for everyone!
Some fun facts about me:
I love learning about history to spend my free time and to learn about our current world.
I am the type of guy who watches fun, goofy math videos on YouTube (yes, they exist. You just gotta LOOK for them).
I participate in other clubs at LAMP, including Speech and Debate, Science Olympiad, and HOSA.
I have a lot of favorite games on my Nintendo Wii that I always come back to play, such as Mario Kart Wii and Sonic Unleashed (truly an underrated game).
Across the world, human rights are being challenged and rolled back, either by authoritarian governments desiring to maintain power or by populist movements struggling for power. SOCHUM focuses on protecting and promoting fundamental human rights, going into topics like civil liberties, women’s rights, refugees’ rights, protection of indigenous peoples, elimination of ethnic violence, and drug control. In committee, delegates will have to face how some fundamental human rights are being violated across the world and propose international standards and actions to maintain those freedoms.
I am very excited to hear all of the discussions and debates that we will have, whether you all work things out smoothly or have bitter infighting amongst yourselves. Do not feel the need to be overly restricted when engaging in committee because you might just bring up a creative solution that really makes the session move forward in an interesting way. Although prior research is a part of the puzzle to do well, being able to actually take initiative and meaningfully engage in committee is THE way to succeed and have a great time in LIMUN.
I can’t wait to meet everyone and have a great time! :)
Sincerely,
Taseen Akbar
