System Software Research Laboratory

Lab Intro

System software is essential for ensuring the performance and stability of computer systems from small embedded devices to large-scale distributed processing systems. System Software Research Laboratory at Division of Computer Engineering, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, conducts research and development of system software related to computer systems, operating systems, and computer architectures. The research fields include ranging from embedded systems, IoT Edge computing devices to server, distributed systems, with focus on IO sub-modules, NVM, Flash Memory-based storage systems, and In-Memory and In-Storage Computing. In addition, it conducts research on architectures and systems for AI and IoT edge computing.

Seung-Ho Lim, Professor

I received BS, MS, and Ph.D degrees in the Division of Electrical Engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 2001, 2003, and 2008, respectively. During the master course, I studied shared file system and disk volume management in Storage Area Network Environment. The theme of MS is design and implementation of volume management for shared file system in SAN environment. During the Ph.D course, I started to study file system and IO subsystem for Flash memory based storages including raw NAND, eMMC, and SSDs. The theme of Ph.D degree is design and implementation of flash file system for NAND flash memory storage system. It has three main features which are efficient metadata management, writeback algorithm, and deduplications. I worked in the memory division of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd from 2008 to 2010, where I was involved in developing a high performance SSD (Solid State Disk) for server storage systems. Specifically, I and my team designed Flash Translation Layer architecture to provide high parallelism and low latency for high performance SSD device that would be used for server systems. The developed FTL was shipped to the commercial products. Currently, I am professor in the Division of Computer Engineering at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies(HUFS). After joining faculty of the department, I have done the several research work and projects related with Flash memory, storage subsystems and interconnect newtork for HPC systems. My research interests include operating systems, embedded systems, computer architecture for AI, flash storage systems, mobile and IoT applications, big data systems and interconnection network for HPC.
