If you ask anyone who’d grown up with Mackenzie Sinclair to describe her in one word, the first thing that would likely leave their mouth is trouble. It’s not like she came from a “bad family,” far from it, in fact, as her parents are extremely well respected criminal lawyers. But as soon as Mak was old enough to observe the difference between how her friend’s parents acted around them compared to how cold her parents were with her, she knew that no matter what she did, her parents would never truly care about her. And so, for years, Mak simply opted to not try. What was the point in doing well if nobody would ever notice?

But when she was set to start secondary school, something shifted. Her parents adopted a little girl named Annabeth, citing it as a chance to start over in her. And the first day Mackenzie Sinclair held her infant sister in her arms, suddenly she understood what love was. Maybe it wasn’t enough to keep Mak on the straight and narrow, but there was someone she could disappoint for the first time in her life. And so, between parties and alcohol binges, Mak studied, and she studied hard. The look of shock on her parent’s faces the day she passed her GCSEs and managed to get into a university in Manchester was so satisfying. Maybe they skipped her graduation out of spite, but… at least she proved them wrong, right?
