“Look up, get up, don’t ever give up.”
Those are the words that, now 28-year-old David Ortwein, one of our former varsity baseball players at Southern Lehigh High School, uttered 10 years ago during his fight against Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The Southern Lehigh and Saucon Valley communities joined together to support him during his fight. He continues to not be alone as so many young people battle cancer in one form or another every day. Ten years ago we came together for David and Reagen Amand (two time cancer survivor and the girl behind Adopt a Pig) with an amazing event that raised over $30,000 for the Ortweins, the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society and Adopt a Pig. Adopt a Pig is a non-profit organization providing Coping Kits designed to help children and their families cope as they face their greatest challenge, fighting cancer. Each Coping Kit is valued at $1,500.
This year, as we bring David and Reagen back to Limeport, we want to celebrate their successes. David is now a nurse at UPenn and previously at CHOP, where he was treated, and Reagen is a graduating Owen J Roberts senior. Unfortunately, cancer has hit home with our Spartan Baseball family once again as Lizzy Fluck (10 year old daughter of former Spartan pitcher and current Southern Lehigh teacher Bob Fluck) was diagnosed with leukemia in November. Lizzy received one of those Coping Kits upon her diagnosis.
Our goal is to raise money once again in the name of David, Reagen, Lizzy and all those affected by cancer. We had tremendous support from local businesses and the community ten years ago, and we need that kind of support to make our Light Up Limeport - 10 Year Anniversary a success. We are once again partnering with the Saucon Valley Baseball Team and community for the event.
Business/family sponsorship opportunities are available. All sponsors will be identified throughout the game on May 4th. There will also be signs and banners recognizing our sponsors. All proceeds will be divided among three organizations that support childhood cancer awareness: Sassy Massy Smiles Foundation, Adopt a Pig, and Angel 34.
Our big event will once again be a “Light Up Limeport” game against Saucon Valley at Limeport Stadium on Saturday, May 4th. The junior varsity teams will play at 3:30pm while the varsity teams will play at 7pm where we will take donations, sell t-shirts, raffle prizes and feature our sponsors again in front of our largest crowd of the season. If you would like to help our cause in any way, we would certainly welcome those donations, as any help and support would be greatly appreciated.
Overall, this 2019 season is to be about much more than just baseball. David’s, Reagen’s, Lizzy’s and the hundreds of children in our area that are fighting battles of their own will continue to teach our kids about compassion, caring, and the understanding of what it means to fight.
