step 2

Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

We should approach this step in parts. My understanding of the concept of coming to believe is that we finally confirm with direct experience, many of us for the first time, the existence of a spiritual world and the possibility of being a part of it. This power greater than ourselves may not be something we can quantify yet, but it is something we can no longer deny.

Being restored to sanity, is worded for the newcomer, many become restored to productive positions in their community, and certainly by the standards of the counselor and the doctor sanity is being restored. Those of us that dive deeper into spiritual awakening over time start to experience this restoration differently. Gurdjieff said that most people were sleeping, or “dead.” walking, talking automatic shells, and that through conscious effort to change we could awaken and be set right again. Being restored to our divinity, to the full potential and possibility of the human experience. This is very much in line with step two. We awaken to the idea that what we thought was a completely normal and acceptable understanding of life was complete madness. We can finally see a glimpse of truth and the possibility of being restored to sanity.

It is also worth mentioning how important it is for the applicant to first be insane before approaching this vital spiritual experience for the first time. This program starts with a man who is desperate enough to call out with a “sincere desire” something that many of us claim, and few of us truly understand. Before a man can live he must first face death. For I have used death to put a death to dying and life living in the light, bathed in love and smiling. Every breath, every movement is a sacred dance, and to begin to reach out and experience it only requires a moment to stop and listen to the music that is always playing, but often goes unnoticed.
