Lifeform Oscillator HUMAN is an App that generates LFO's and Modulation signals dirived from visual simulations and outputs them as Midi Control Change data.
An Example:
- Track the Y co-ordinates of a simulated HUMANS' foot scaled to output a value between 0-127 - output it on Midi Ch 1, CC 50 - assign it to control a LP filter cutoff on your favourite midi capable device
- Couple that with tracking the X Co-ordinates of the HUMANS' head and scale the output between 30-85 - output it on Midi Ch 2, CC 14 - assign to control the feedback level on a delay
..... add more trackers and assign as you wish
Change the simulations' contols, speed, scale the size, drag around the screen, rotate... Experiment!
You will see each LFO's / modulation signal will be different and will modulate in different / multiple ways whilst essentially bonded by the same force .
The App contains 10 Lifeform Simulations designed to generate different types of signals. Each simulation allows up to 6 midi slots of different tracked co-ordinates, accessable through the Midi Settings Menu. The menu will allow you to scale, invert and solo the output per midi slot.
Each of the Midi Slots' outputs can be visualised in the form of a sparkline using the LFO Output overlay
Tech note:
Whilst each simulation runs within a 3-dimensional space, the co-ordinates are mapped to the 2-dimensional screen. - Think of it like a micro simulation running on the surface of an x-y pad.
Why?
The App is designed as a creative tool to introduce unexpected signals and unexpected LFO's into your music production
How do I connect the app? - 3 different ways!
Via USB > Computer (CoreMidi): Plug in your lightning or USB-C cable into your ios device and hook it up directly to a usb port on your computer. in MACOSX's Audio Midi Setup you will see the phone appear in the side bar with an 'enable' button. Click it and you should see midi data flowing.
Via USB > MIDI HUB: The easiest way to connect the app via usb is to hook it up directly to a midi hub like these (i.e. https://tinyurl.com/52z5623s or https://tinyurl.com/4kz3d84y ) . You may need a cheap adapter like this: https://tinyurl.com/yc5s8v95 - This will also allow you to keep you device fully powered whilst the app is in use!
Via Bluetooth: In the Apps' 'Midi Settings' press 'Advertise BLE MIDI' . Go to Audio Midi Setup > Midi Studio > Bluetooth Configuration. Your device should become visible with a button to 'connect' the phone. Bluetooth midi can be picky - if it doesn't connect first time, try re-connect.
We have a Lifeform Oscilatior Midi Companion OSX app that aids connection and will display the incoming midi signal from the IOS app and sparkline
