Knowledge on e-Library Automation
Necessary background information should be available for the libraries enabling them to go for a successfully library automation incorporating emerging technologies.
The Libraries are presently automated employing automating elements such as automation software, computers, network/internet, bar-coded books & user ID card (or RFID systems), and barcode scanner (or RFID gate and sensors).
All library activities such as acquiring books (acquisition), cataloguing (copy and import from internet), circulation (lending and return), searching for availability of book etc.. are being automated.
The function of a library should be computerized by employing proper library system and set-up to satisfy the library readers (the people) with the applications of ICT . This would change the non-readers to become readers. The people are speed in absorbing technologies and their aspiration is also found as set to access the knowledge through emerging technologies. There are many technologies influence the library and information science such as online book searching, online book shelves, online book cover & content pages, classified access to internet resources, class notes and videos. Only very few school libraries are providing service using these facilities, in the Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka. The implementation of library automation would enable students, teachers, parents and general public to enjoy the new library technologies in support of teaching, learning, and other knowledge discoveries.
