AltSpaceVR for Organising Events

Liang Men 04.02.2021

This report briefs the basic steps of using AltSpace VR for organising events in VR.

I just realized how powerful this VR social platform in terms of organising the events (e.g. presentations) in VR. It did take me 1-2 days to figure out how to stream slides/video to VR and invite people to the events using AltSpaceVR, so I decided to write it down for those who want to organise their own events in VR.

The report includes two parts:

Steps to Join/Share an Event by an Invitation Link

Step 1.

Download AltSpaceVR to your Oculus Quest (or other VR devices)

Step 2.

Sign up within Altspace following the instructions.

Step 3.

Open a browser,

https://altvr.com/

Log in AltSpaceVR your account

Step 4.

Open a new tab in the browser, paste the invitation link sent by the event organiser. https://account.altvr.com/events/1668896217842582346 (Note: you need to replace this link with the one you received the organiser. The event invitation link may not work if you have not signed in your AltSpaceVR account).

Step 5.

Click the blueish RSVP (which means reserve place I guess), then the button will change to “interested”.

Step 6.

Now go to the AltSpaceVR within your VR headset, the event should appear in AltSpace -> Events -> Interested.

Then hover your reticle upon the event, and click “Enter”, you should be able to join the event’s venue.

Steps to Stream Slides/Video in VR Using AltSpace Web Projector

Please note the method introduced here can only enable the event organiser to stream a tab of a web browser into VR. The attendees can not steam it.

Step 1. Create an event within AltSpaceVR.

Click Events -> Create Event -> Pick an Event Category, e.g.  “Presentation

Click ENTER NOW.

Step 2. Create a Web projector in your event room.

Click World Editor - >Editor Panel

In the editor panel, click Basic -> Web Projector, now the web projector (see picture below) should appear in your virtual meeting room. Remember to close the Editor Panel by clicking the X at the bottom.

Step 3. Install Microsoft Edge and AltSpace VR Web Projector Plugin

Install Microsoft Edge onto your Mac or Windows

Download Microsoft Edge Browser | Microsoft

Download the AltSpace VR Web Projector Plugin

Download Web Projector | AltspaceVR (altvr.com) click ACCEPT at the bottom to download.

Unzip the zip file “altvr-webprojector-1.0.7.zip” to a known directory.

Sideload the AltSpace VR Web Projector Plugin to your Edge browser:

Open the edge://extensions page by choosing the three dots at the top of your Edge browser, and then selecting Extensions.

On the extension management page at edge://extensions, turn on Developer mode using the toggle at the bottom left of the page.

Choose "Load Unpacked".

Choose the unzipped altvr-webprojector-1.0.7 folder, and click Select.

Step 4. Run Altvr-WebProjector Extension on Edge

Click the black icon of the AltSpaceVR Web Projector extension in the browser (located at the right side of the address bar), log in your AltSpaceVR account and click Start Streaming. Now the current browser tab is being streamed to your AltSpaceVR.

Now go to the VR version of AltSpace, click the Connect button, and then you should be able to see the browser tab.

To enable the audience to see your browser, you also need to click the Broadcast button. Then people inside the meeting room will all be able to see and hear the contents on that tab, Youtube video also works perfect!

Step 5: Sharing your Event.

If you want to share your event so others can join. Go to your computer browser, and log in your AltaSpaceVR account, you can find the event, and find a link for share. Share that with others, and ask them to log in their AltSpaceVR account and mark the event “interested”, then the event will appear in their Events tab under the “interested” category.

You can also edit the event in the web browser, which gives more freedom to edit the event compared with the event management system inside VR.
