Getting residents to vote is only the first stage of becoming engaged. Attending government body meetings provides insight into current issues. Not only do attendees become educated, but speaking up provides feedback to government representative of the public's views. Attending meetings provides the background to become appointed or elected members of the governing bodies, such as boards, commissions, committees, and councils.
